The car will run, for sure, but the money saved in gas will probably be lost in mileage and performance. I would stick with premium. In my LS, which i think has a smaller brother of your engine, requires premium. That's what i use..... I would'nt pinch pennies with the LX.

I ran all the way to 170k milage on the 87 octane with my previous LX470. Never noticed any performance difference (with the compression ratio being so low, I think it is more than fine). The manual stated the Premium recommended, meaning not required. Personally I figure the 91 recommendation is there for other reasons (ease of certification, compliance etc).

hmmm, maybe the 470's compression ration has something to do with it. On my LS, it says premium REQUIRED on the fuel door.

oh, absolutely! The LX engine is different - much lower compression, overall the engine was re-designed and adapted for the off-road use.

I have a 2001 LX470 with 103K miles and have always used 87 octane without any problems whatsoever. This is my second LX470. My 1st LX470 had 120K miles and always used 87 octane as well. I sold it because the buyer gave me an incredible offer I couldn't refuse.

Unless you are towing heavy, use 87 octane. I think long distance travel may also benefit from high octane. I've traveled the same route with each of the octanes at 70mph highway miles and I saw no difference in mileage when checking odometer settings.

I use 87 octane, unless I plan to do some driving that requires max engine performance, such as pulling a trailer.
