Is it possible to replace the tail light with the newer model tail lights?

No, the actual lights are different widths, and the cutout in the lift gate is correspondingly differing. A new set of tail lights would be too wide.

However, they apparently make some aftermarket ones that look similar that fit the older LXs.

I kept all the stock lens assemblies on my 1999 LX470 and replaced the incandescent bulbs with aftermarket L.E.D. bulbs, (I used "Jamb Straight" brand). I did this 7 years ago, have had no problem and they look great!
