Default LX470 idiot lights

Maybe someone can help me out. The idiot lights "ABS", "VSC trac", "VSC off", and "BRAKE" have come on and stayed on in my 2002 LX470. They were coming on and staying on intermittently (I could get rid of them when turning off the ignition and turning it back on) but since my last service (105k) yesterday they stay on all the time.

Diagnostics run back at the dealership today point to a "hydraulic brake booster", the dealership wants $2100 to fix it.

Any knowledge/experience/recommendations about this part and the cost to fix it would be appreciated. Also, does the master cylinder need to be replaced (or are these parts one and the same?)?

Try to have the system flushed. I think they recommend it at 100k.

Does the brake pedal go to the floor or provide insufficient pressure. If it is the electronic booster, the part alone is around $1300 on discount. If you get the booster + master cylinder unit, it's around $1500, so you may as well have the entire unit replaced rather than just the booster if, indeed, that is the faulty component. I generally flush my brakes every 1-1.5 yrs (FSM recommends every 30K mi); brake fluid absorbs water, so it should be replaced based on time rather than miles. 30K mi at 12K mi/yr is about 2.5 yrs.

My 2005 LX470 is in the shop right now for the very same problem. The whole assembly consists of the (1) reservoir (2) master cylinder (3) actuator assembly and (4) accumulator. It is (3) that is thought to be the problem om my truck and we are waiting for the parts. Let's hope that fixes it. Otherwise it will start getting real expensive from there on.

BTW, I would recommend changing your brake fluid every 1-2.5 yrs at tops. Brake fluid absorbs moisture, and if enough moisture is inside the system, it can rust the brakes/master cylinder out internally.

Jim: I have changed the brake fluid last year (so 2 years from new) and still the darn part went bad. The truck is fixed now, and was covered by warranty. Lexus replaced the booster and the master cylinder assembly. It took four days altogether.

If using your own brake fluid, get one that resists absorbing water. I have found the Toyota brand brake fluid performs well. Others may prematurely absorb water and lead to degraded performance and rust.
