Default 1998 LX470 Stereo Amp Gain Control

I'm looking at a 1998 LX470 with a factory installed sound system. There is NO Nakamichi/Mark Levinson logo. And of course, the 6 CD changer has the dreaded ERR3 problem.

I have installed an after-market head unit and all is working fine, but there is some hiss when the the unit is on and the volume is turned to zero. The hiss does not get louder when the volume is turned up, so maybe it's not a gain problem, but it would be real easy to test if there was a gain control **** on the factory amp.

Does anyone know if there is one on the amp and if it is accessible without detaching any of the bolts from the passenger seat?

Did you ever get this fixed? I have exactly the same problem and almost had the amp removed, but couldn't quite do it without going further (i.e. tearing apart the factory seat).

Thanks

the hissing is generally caused if you are using the amplified speaker output of your aftermarket deck as the feed into the cars amp which causes the feedback. I had the same problem when I orginally wired my LX, I then went back and used the RCA outputs from the deck and spliced them into the inputs for the factory amp and all hissing is gone.

you can in fact turn the factory amp down. there is a gain control ****, but yes the seat must come out. i currently have the problem because the idiots at the install place didnt run the power through the RCA outs. i didnt do the install myself because there was just one simple problem i couldnt master so i had them do it and while they were at it i just told them to wire the whole thing, and now i have hissing. it'll prolly take me about two hours to fix it, i have just been too busy

not sure how to help you on that but if you need a replacement I have a refurbished NAK one with the built in 6 disc changer which the dealer put in that worked perfectly till a few months ago when I pulled it out to put in Navigation.

pampanga, theres a site online, shows you step by step how to remove a factory nak, and take out the discs, but it seldom cures the ERR3 message.

Some aftermarket head units have a feature where you can actually turn on/off powered amplification through menus. Mine still hissed though.

If your talking about the amp under the passenger seat, first move the seat all the way back and pull back the carpet and to un-clip the harnesses that are plugged into the amp. Its been a while but I think there are 3 or 4. Then move seat forward all the way, pull up carpet and remove styrofoam insulation and there are a couple of bolts from what I remember anchoring it down. You should then be able to remove the amp.
