Hello,

I have a 2006 LX470 and reaching close towards the 40,000 miles. Could anyone advise, if it is worth taking the extended warranty from the dealer. The warranty cost is close to $2500. Please advise.

well, it depends on how long u will keep it. personally i say get the warranty, but other will probably steer u away from it

for an lx I would get the ext warranty, the raadio will go out when you least expect it, the antenna will get stuck, your cv boots will start to leak, I say get it if your going to keep the car until 100,000 miles which it will last way longer.

Only you can decide whether the extended warranty is worth it. Lexus used to (I'm assuming they still do) offer three levels of extended warranties. From a basic powertrain to a nearly bumper to bumper 7 year/100K mile warranty.

If we decide that we're going to keep our LX once it comes off lease, I am going to try and get Lexus to throw in the platinum extended warranty at buy out. They've done this several times for us in the past. I think the drivetrain and othe rmajor components are basically bulletproof (and a big part of the reason why we bought a quote/un-quote long in the tooth 2006 LX with proven technology rather than the newest SUV on the block. But the HVAC/NAV system/touchscreen unit is supposedly very expensive (I've heard $8,000 retail) and you can't exactly drive these things comfortably if that were to die.

One thing that I should mention is that dealers mark up extended warrantees as they see fit. When we gave my sister our old IS300 we encouraged her to get a platinum extended warrantee at that time. She called four different dealerships and got quotes from $1,100 - $2,500 for the same exact Lexus warrantee.

Finally, and on a somewhat related note... our 1997 LS400 is now 10-years old with 137,000 miles on it. It's been out of warranty a long, long time. I drove it to play golf yesterday and other than some of the digits in the clock not lighting up fully, it's just like brand new. I honestly think that Toyota/Lexus builds these things for the long hauls you can take some peace of mind from that.

Take the money you would spend on the ext. warranty and put it in a CD. The worst problem you could have is with the Nav/system controler that also works the air/heat. There have been a couple that have had a problem but the odds are way in your favor that you won't have a problem. Do a search and you will see it is very rare.

Well, i would get it because there are a few well-known problems with the LX such as exhaust manifold leak, starter issues, NAVI issues, and air suspension issues. I would not pay more than $2.5K for extended warranty (up to 100K miles). My brother's LX has suffered most of these...and the warranty should pay for itself in the end if it's a good one. The exhaust manifold leak, for example, runs at least $1K in parts & labor i think. But remember, there are TWO exhaust manifolds that can and will go bad, likely before 100K miles...so, that's at least $2K right there! With these high end luxury cars, an extended warranty is not a bad idea if the price is right.

Is that for a platinum warranty out to 100K? I think the one worth getting is the platinum. Read the fine print and see if it covers rattles. If you plan to keep it until 100K, I'd say get it. If you plan to sell, you should do it before 50K since you can get a better trade-in price due to it still being under warranty. If you trade-in before 60K, the dealer can certify it provided you have all service records from the dealer. This should get you more $$. I bought my '03 certified. It came w/ the 3 yr warranty, but I extended it to 5 yrs. The warranty will probably run out before I hit 100K mi since I've owned it for 1.5 yrs and have only driven it 11K mi. I figured i'd drive 10K mi/yr max on it, as it's only my rec/road trip car.

170k on the odometer, I've yet to spend a cent outside the regular maintenance. Occasional off-roading as well.

Doc you and Jim Chow have a good handle on these problems. From what I've read over the years on this forum and Mud, that most of the problems with the manifold, starter, suspension and Navi system happen before the 100K mile mark. I would think that a CPO vehicle with the 3 year 100K warranty would cover a person for these potential risks. What's your take?

I think that you are good to go with a warranty like that! I am not a big fan of used cars...thus, a 3 year/100K mile warranty CPO will worth it's weight in gold for sure.

I've got over 141,000 on a 1999 LX470. The starter did go out but other than that it's been trouble free and running strong. Good luck.

I bought at 50K mi and figured I'd drive at most 10K mi/yr, so I needed 5 yrs. I packaged the 2 yr extension in the price of the vehicle (much cheaper this way) and got the extra 2 yrs for a steal. If you buy on the afternoon of the last weekend of the month, dealers are more motivated to move their inventory. Plus the LX470, having been around since '98, is a dated design, so demand is likely much lower. Just wait until the new LX570 debuts next year and you should see a bunch of 2-3 yr old LX470 lease returns/trade-ins. Most buyers of new cars in the LX price range are more concerned about having a new car or the latest body style rather than losing a bunch on the trade in.
