I have used up the depriciation on my 2001 LX470 and (also have racked up almost 80k miles) was lining up to get an '03'04'05 for all of the sweet upgrades only to find out that Lexus has reduced the tow rating from 6500lbs to 5000lbs!!!!
The bad news for me is that my boat (Cobalt 246) weighs in at 5500lbs (w/fuel and trailer).
.........I may have to go to a GX470 to get 6500lbs back....and the 270 hp.
Has anyone figured out how to up-rate the tow weight on the later LX's?
For that matter has anyone towed a boat of this size with a GX? (My '01 LX does a fine job).

hello there i am also disppointed by the lower weight; the reason is that the lx and the tlc use an integrated hitch now from the bumper. i actually dont need the heavy weight to i need a high tongue rating because i carry a motor bike on it. I currently have a 99 and was really interested in getting a new one. I dont know about the gx

Actually, I don't think the LC has the integrated hitch. Toyota website still lists the LC towing capacity at 6,500lb.

The Land Cruiser still uses a standard Class III hitch rated at 6500 lbs. The LX went with a smaller integrated hitch which could be hidden from site better for the non-towing owners. There is however no reason the LX cannot still pull 6500 lbs. Check out Draw-tite and I think they offer a replacement hitch for the newer models which will fit under the bumper,like the old style. I have not seen one done but would also like to know if in fact the built in hitch can be removed and the old style put in its place.
