Default Piston Slap

I have noticed a few members of the Tundra Solutions web site have mentioned over the past few years that their 4.7 V8's have piston slap. This is on Tundra's and Sequoia's. I belong to this site, some Landcruiser sites and a 4runner site and no one on any of these sites has posted having piston slap on their LC/LX/GX or V8 4runner. The only difference I see from these Toyota/Lexus vehicles and the very few Tundra's and Sequoia's that have complained about piston slap would be that our vehicles and our engines are manufactured in Japan and the Tundra/Sequoia 4.7 V8's our manufactured in the USA. There is a flaw in my logic, and that is that when the Tundra's were first manufactured in the USA Toyota didn't have a engine plant in the USA and shipped engines over from Japan. I don't know when this changed and if it is a manufacturing plant thing that is causing this problem. Have any of you experienced piston slap in your LX? If you don't know what piston slap is it makes your vehicle sound like a diesel engine until it warms up (a few minutes) and it normally would not show it's self unless the outside temp is below 30 degrees. Of course Toyota has informed the Tundra/Sequoia owners that this will not effect the dependablity/durablity of their 4.7 V8's and called it normal. Several of these owners have between 10K-150K miles on their trucks.

PS- I've now been told that Toyota hasn't started building V8's in the USA yet??? Anyone know for sure?

I never noticed it in my previous '98 Land Cruiser, and definitely not in my '04.

Yep,

99 LX470 with 75k and it has piston slap. It started last winter when the truck had 60k miles and only on the coldest mornings if the truck was left outside. 1 to 2 minutes you could hear it....

Now this year it is doing it at warmer temps and even at 45 degrees. Lexus says its normal and will not effect the dependability....sounds like we have heard that before. Sure, they will say that...but come on! This thing sounds like crap when you start it cold....like a rod knocking.

Piston slap is too much clearance.....noise is wear, it will wear even faster, make more noise and time goes by until you crack a skirt or ring land. Period.

My Supra twin turbo never had piston slap...even with 500+ hp
My Supra turbo never had piston slap....even with 500hp, 70k miles and still own it
My Celica Alltrac turbo never had piston slap...even with 300+hp, 70k miles and still own it
My SC400 never had piston slap, 92, 70k...still own it
My 3 LS400s never had piston slap 92 w/150k, 94 w/120k and now our 00 with 30k

"Houston, we have a problem here"

Stay tuned...I have Lexus people jerking me around on this issue and I will not accept "normal condition"
