While I do spend the few extra bucks to use synthetic oils, I don't think it's necessary. And I certainly don't think I'd ever know the difference between one synthetic and another. In fact, I would bet thousands of dollars that I (and 95% of others here) would never know the difference if I used a good conventional oil. My family has a number of Ford, Chevrolet, and Dodge half-, 3/4-, and one-ton work trucks that get used way, waaay harder than my Lexus SUVs. They use conventional oil, changed at about 6K mile intervals using regular Fram/Motorcraft/Wix/Purolator/whatever filters. Typically, by the time the engines have about 220 - 260K miles on them, the trucks are worn enough and old enough that they get replaced (not usually sold or traded, just turned out to pasture, so to speak), but the engines are usually still running fine with no oil-related issues. If these trucks, worked as hard as they are, do that well with conventional oil and filters, I'm highly confident that a Toyota engine, hauling my family and me to school and soccer games and the grocery store, will be just fine with pretty much any oil that I pour in.
