Default Service and reliability of a Lexus LX470

I seriously caution you and recommend multiple opinions before investing into $4000 in service on a LX470 with only 34k miles. I am surrounded by LX470's of all conditions- two of which have in excess of 300K miles on them. These vehicles are relatively sound and designed off of the Landcruiser platform. Do yourself wise and research what is truly wrong before either giving up your money, or giving up on the vehicle. You may find only basic routine maintenance is needed. Of course if something is leaking, or overheating, address that quickly. Other than that , assumptions- even by a dealer are exactly that. Remember, dealer service writers work on commission- as in they profit off of writing you up for repairs. Second guess all recommendations unless something is overtly wrong.

Default Btw, this does not cost what they are quoting.

Also, if, and I say IF the LX needs all this service. It shouldn't cost $4000. Alternative estimates are required at this point before moving ahead.

Does this car have problems that I don't realize since its been sitting too long?

Here are the repairs they are saying need to be done:
Replace leaking water pump, timing belts, drive belts
Coolant was low
Cv boots cracked and need to be replaced and replaced
Exhaust muffler needs to be replaced
Radio antenna replacement
Rotate and balance tires due to shaking of wheel at highway speeds
Oil dirty and needs to be changed

Just shocked with so many repairs with such low mileage.

Any comments? Advice?

Was this pricing from a Dealer?

The T-belt service is a big job and most shops would charge $1500-2000 for that alone. It's a lot of labor to do right. The muffler can be priced really high as well. I found dealers charging anywhere from $400-800 when I looked for a replacement for my 99 LC.

None of those items are really worrisome or unusual. Low mileage is great, but age plays into a lot of maintenance items just the same. At 10 years old, it's definitely a "used" car, despite the crazy low mileage.

Take each item as it's own en-devour and price them out. I bet the big items are just the T-belt service and muffler, which are common and nothing to be afraid of.

I'd call tb / h2o pump change for $1500 is on the high side, $2K is nuts...though at a dealer in a metro area that may be the way it is. Local Lexus dealer here wants $1300, Toyota dealer $1200. Independent shop with mechanics VERY experienced with Cruisers and LS's charged $1K out the door. I did our '01LX at 90K. With a factory shop manual and never having done one before, I knocked it out in 1-1/2 long days. The parts exchange portion of the job is easy. Getting to the parts, and more importantly, putting the thing back together so it looked like it did before I started took time. Bought a cheap camera, took a bunch of pics as I disassembled the thing helped more than I expected when I put everything back together. I would have done it again, but up to ears this time of year with ag equipment maintenance.

I have an 06 with 70K on it. I just had Lexus do the TB service, it cost me about $1200. I can't imagine that the exhaust needs to be replaced at 34k unless its completely rusted out, sad if so. I replaced the antenna myself, the parts alone were about $300, if your CV boots are torn, get them replaced and have them check the axels while they're in there but a 34k I'm sure that the axels are fine.

I suggest becoming a member of http://forum.ih8mud.com/ everything you'll need to know about 100 series cruisers is on there.

$4k bill seems like a lot for what they listed.
