RIP Lexus 2000 LX470...
I bought this new off the showroom floor for $62,000. which was the sticker price in February, 2000. My wife is in her 60's now and she said it was getting to be too much vehicle for her. So we traded it in for $13,000. with 82,000 miles on it toward a new 2012 RX 350 last week. Definitely a different driving experience, with pluses and minuses for each. Man, it was a good "car." And I hate to see it go, but time moves on. Here's hoping the new vehicle comes close to matching the quality and satisfaction of the previous vehicle, although I think the Lexus pursuit of excellence branding is not quite up to the original standard.

I have always loved our lx470. A 2001 we bought used in 2002 with 10k miles. Just drove it from Buffalo to Boston, and it is a great SUV. Was going 85 and was stable, that mixed with an escort radar detector and a very fast flow of traffic made for a quick, quiet, and relaxed 7 hour trip returning 16.8 MPG

13k is definitely on what I would perceive to be the low side, although every person's deal is different. If you live in a market that AutoTrader Instant Trade in serves (basically anywhere in the U.S.) you would likely have received more. I say this because they are offering 12,667.00 on our 2000 with 150k. I've used their service before and it is essentially a guaranteed offer for purchase or trade (some affiliate dealers only participate in the trade in side and will not cut a check, others will cut you a check right there on the spot). I'm really enjoying the truck, but if I decide I still want something sportier, I will probably go ahead and sell it to them. The only caveat is you have to be very accurate on your description of the condition or they may count off for items not disclosed in the original online appraisal. If the dealer then buys the car and doesn't want to keep it for resale, they sell the car to an AutoTrader rep at the auction.
It's pretty amazing that these trucks are still worth so much 12 years on and with so much mileage. That is a testament to the land cruiser's history. Try trading in a 12 year old range rover or navigator...

Both Lexus dealers in the Seattle area offered me $13K for the car, independent of one another and at different times of the week. One dealer showed me the wholesale listing of the car which showed $13k in excellent condition and down from there to $10K. One of the dealers started out at $10K and came up from there. The $13K comes off the price of the new car and reduces the sales tax by that much. I ended up getting the RX 350 at a little below invoice so it worked out OK.
There's no question though that I could have gotten $3 to $4K more if I had sold it myself. Didn't feel like undergoing the trouble associated with it.

OP makes a couple good points:
- Some states allow trade-in amount to be deducted from the new car sales price for tax computation.
- Private sales are often a PITA.

KBB is shown by a dealer when he loads you with a used car. KBB is for general public, Black Book is not, and NADA is geared more towards lenders' evaluations. In few words: KBB is garbage. Manheim Auctions is the latest going price for autos, and at times LX go there above what you'd pay at the dealers.
