You should go and check out IH8MUD.COM, some of the trucks there like the 2000 Land Cruisers have gone to 200,000 miles.

I hope to see my LX470 run great for another 75,000!

Thats another problem with LX470 owners, there LX470 just stays in the garage, thats pretty sad to see. Like my friend has a 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser but it only has 20,000 miles on it! All it does is collect dust from the garage.

FYI, there's a '03-05 LC100 police car in one of my LC mags (front grille and wheels indicate these years). Everything appears to be basically stock except the interior dash/center console (no, they don't have high speed car chases there...no where to drive fast w/o hitting traffic). Anyways, there's a large sticker on the dash that says max speed is 215 km/hr, which is 133mph. And that vehicle has the sirens mounted on some big, non-aerodynamic base on the roof. So, no 1LoudLX, you didn't hit the max speed limit yet!

As far as vegas, everytime I drive westbound, it seems like I hit traffic from just west of Barstow all the way in. Here in AZ I seldom see any cops checking for speed other than in S. Phoenix on I-10 east just as you're leaving town. State speed limit is 75mph, so that means 80-85 mph is the norm.

Yes, at 95k I had everything done (timing belt, serp, water pump, rotars, brake pads, spark plugs, ball bearings repacked) everything that is suggested. Cost me about $1600 which was a hard pill to swallow...but I knew I didnt want any other car...so I did it. Just about a month ago, (at around 106,5k) I had issues with my car not starting. Some days it would, some days it wouldnt...I had it checked and ended up needing the starter replaced..cost about $400. I hope I am set for a while...although I know new tires are not far down the road.

The 95k was done at a Toyota dealership...the starter work was done by an independent local mechanic

Regretably, spends way too much time in the garage. Have only been driven 100 miles in the last 2 months

Locally here I'm being quoted $1300 just for the 60K mile service. Methink that is pure stealing. I'm gonna have to find a shop that'd do that for less. How much are you guys spending for the 60K service ? BTW, on my LS, the 60K only cost me like $600 or something like that.

As for speed limits, on a couple trips to Las Vegas, I averaged 90mph easily. Been lucky (knock on wood) that I've yet to find any CHP or other traffic cops on the road. 90mph seems about average on the 15N all the way to Vegas

wow... after reading the comments u guys post, it looks like you guys drive pretty slow(not that its any problem)...

currently my odo says 89,992mi and the truck feels like its gonna break apart any second now. Do you guys feel the same as i do?? I mean everytime i get to highway and goes over 85mph my truck starts to shake and the interior has creaking and cracking sound, very scary. and the sound gets louder if i go even faster....

i hope my truck last until the new LX truck comes out...

ya thats slow in my book. 90mph breaks any speedlimit in the US with room to spare. From talking to Val, he probably drives a lot like me, and he has bigger heavier tires. His trucks good and so is mine.

David, are you wheels properly balanced? That could cause a huge portion of your vibrations. Have you lubed the joints in your Driveshaft(s)? When was the last time you flushed any fluids?

I've only driven mine about 15 mi in the last month! :-) Am taking it on a day trip tomorrow (~120 mi). It's a pure rec car. The '86 4runner is the DD...22mpg, and that's w/ lift, bigger tires, full body armor.

$1.3K for the 60K is cheaper than any of the places I checked. My local dealer (only 2 dealers in town, both under the same ownership, i.e., monopoly) wanted $2.4K! They do a bunch of unnecessary stuff. Next closest dealer in Phoenix wanted $1.6K. Both prices were way more than I was willing to pay, so I did most of it myself except had the local toyota dealer repack the front wheel bearings (using my OEM parts I got from CDan at American Toyota in NM on discount) and changed the ATF. Here's my cost breakdown:

1) Mobil 1 delvac 75w90 synthetic gear oil ($50)
2) 4 diff crush gaskets ($3.56)
3) 2 aluminum gaskets for t-case ($1.38)
4) 2 inner hub oil seals ($34)
5) 2 lock ring washers ($3)
6) 2 drive flange gaskets ($2.50)
7) 1 engine air filter, Toyota ($22)
8) 2 denso OEM cabin filters ($26)
9) 1 tube Mobil 1 NLGI-2 MP grease ($6)
10) 2 gal Mobil 1 delvac 5w40 synthetic oil ($55)
11) 1 OEM factory denso oil filter ($7, no longer sold in US)
12) 1 oil drain pan gasket ($.60)
13) 3 gal Toyota red coolant ($58)
14) 5 gal steam distilled water ($5)
15) labor for front wheel bearing repack ($196, by ex-lexus tech at toyota dealer)
16) transmission fluid exchange, 12 qts ($150, by ex-lexus tech at toyota dealer)
17) 1 can of carburetor cleaner ($3)
18) stainess steel brush

Work breakdown was
day 1:
1) change engine oil (7.5K mile interval w/ M1 delvac), oil filter, air filter
2) change front/rear diff oil, t-case oil
3) retorque bolts underneath vehicle
4) inspect ball joints, CV boots

day 2: take car to dealer
5) repack front wheel bearings & inspect brakes while wheels are off
6) change ATF

day 3:
7) change coolant (drained radiator and left block 3x, flush w/ distilled water,
mix 50-50 coolant & distilled water)
8) lube front & rear drive shafts
9) change cabin air filters
10) clean carbon buildup around throttle body flap (dealer doesn't do this, nor is it spec'd in the manual, but carbon builds up and after a while [like 100K mi], it's sticky enough that the servo motor can't open the throttle body flap easily, and it throws a check engine code saying the TB is bad; dealer will replace TB for $1500 when all you had to do was buy a $3 can of carb cleaner and gently wire brush the carbon off, careful not to get it in the sensor at 12 o'clock).
11) inspect fluids (had AHC and brake fluid changed 6 mo ago; will have AHC fluid done every 2 yrs and will do brake fluid myself this year), serp belt. Changing both fluids costs about $250 at the dealer.

I'm in between tire rotations (run 6-7K mi rotations), last checked the rear brakes about 4 months ago.

If you haven't had your serpentine belt done yet, you might consider it (at least inspect it to see if it needs it; my original one was shot at 45K mi). You don't need to do the spark plugs until 120K mi since they're iridium. Beware that the dealers (all of them) use TAP water in the radiator. You can buy the pre-mixed Toyota red coolant at some dealerships to avoid this.

Jim I guess the reason the 2004 is way cheaper is that you don't do anything to the transmission, and cooling system until 100K miles. Also my local dealer says they never touch the front/rear diff's or the transfercase unless you use the vehicle to tow, then they suggest every 30K miles. So with the 2004 you would only do the front wheel bearing repack, filters, and normal oil/filter change with lube. I think when I get to the 60K I might have the diff's and transfercase just because I can't see letting it go past that distance unless they used synthetic from the factory. Did Toyota/Lexus start using synthetic in the diff's and transfercase in 2004???

To my knowledge, toyota still uses 90 wt gear oil in the diffs. In LC mag, there are pics of people using pails of Toyota hypoid gear oil, 90wt (says in the can). All 90 wts are mineral based as far as I know. You dealer is just going by the owner's manual, which says to inspect diff/t-case fluids at 30K intervals and change if vehicle is primarily used for towing. The manual says the same for the ATF for pre '04 vehicles. Like you say, 60K is a long time for mineral based gear oil. I did a test on my old 4runner..ran mineral based in the tranny & t-case in Seattle, WA. 21K mi later, I drained it and put in synthetic in both. I didn't use the t-case at all (was in 2wd mode all the time). Drained that one and it looked new (no surprise, like filtered honey). The manual tranny fluid was shot at 21K...looked like unfiltered honey. I replaced both with Redline MT-90 synthetic, drained the tranny fluid again 30K mi later (that's CA and AZ desert driving, not the cool pacific NW driving). It still looked almost new, without that unfiltered honey cloudy look w/ the mineral-based 75w90 fluid. This had me convinced that synthetic IS the way to go. There's no way I'd run a mineral-based gear oil 60K mi, but I'd run a quality synthetic (Redline, M1) 60K without batting an eye.

For the front bearing repack, it's about $350. Oil change is $50, cabin filters (dealer will probably charge $50 ea (2), plus 1/2 hr labor ($50), so $150). Air filter is about $30 list. Lube can't be that much...1/2 hr labor? ($50). Brake fluid change is 1 hr labor + fluid (about $100-120). AHC fluid flush is 1 can of fluid ($30) plus 1 hr labor, so $130-150. Wheel rotation is $20. So that's about $900 if you have all the work done a la carte. $1.3K is, indeed, pricey for what you're getting. I guess they are charging you $400 for stuff like inspecting the ball/CV joints, steering linkages, suspension, and gas tank band! :-) Those only take like 10 minutes max to do with the car on the lift! I don't consider that "real work" eventhough the dealer does. The ex-lexus tech at toyota inspected my front brakes free of charge while doing the repack. After all, you gotta remove the calipers and rotor to repack the inner bearing, so it's like you just spend an extra 20 seconds looking at the caliper and rotor! I know, 'cause I've done it twice on my 4runner, and the front is exactly the same except the 4runner uses a bolt at the end of the axle and has a manual locking hub instead of the c-clip and drive flange on the LC.

PS: if you have a toyota dealer do the work, DON'T let them touch the AHC. Most toyota techs have never worked on a vehicle w/ AHC since the landcruisers didn't get it until 2006, and many techs have never even worked on a 98-06 landcruiser since they're so rare. FWIW, most toyota dealers will charge anywhere from about $150-250 to change the diff and t-case fluids on a LC.
