I'm not sure how this exactly works. I mean isn't the buttons next to the shifter supposed to higher or lower the car? It does that when the car is in park, but however when I get the car moving, it automatically moves back to neutral. WHAT GIVES?

The suspension is made for use offroad (high mode) and it will stay in high mode up to i believe 15mph which is typically as fast as you would like to go offroad. It is also made for easier entering and exiting and loading of the vehicle (low mode) and will stay in low mode up to 15mph also. It is very handy for these situations and it can also be helpful when hooking up a trailer (back up to the trailer and then raise the car and lock the trailer onto the ball and crank the stand up) It makes it easier with a heavy trailer IMO.

Oh I see, so if I go over the "set limit" it goes back to neutral.

Why do you want to keep an artificial ride height?


There are threads here about it. Putting the Vehicle into Low Range will keep the Height set for a higher speed.

At low the suspension is very close to the bump stops so you do not have much travel in the suspension.

At high the wheel cambers at different so steering and road holding is affected.

The height adjustment system has sensors that activate automatically even at a higher rate of speed than the 15 mph limit.

I was traveling through Houston a few months ago and there were some serious cross winds blowing at least 30 mph or better. I was doing about 70 on the freeway when the truck suddenly adjusted itself to the lower level and stayed there for about an hour. It then readjusted the height back to normal.

This caught me by surprise because I didn't know that feature existed. I have tried many times to get the ol' LX to ride at a different setting beyond the 15 mph limit but have been unsuccessful.

The LX will drop down to low at speeds below 3-4 MPH. It is useful when parking so when everyone gets out there is less of a step down. It also might help in a roof clearance situation. The hydraulic height control will not move up or down when any doors are open or ajar. The next time you drive the car will return to normal at about 4-5 MPH. It blinks when moving and is solid once it sets.

High mode will work up to about 19 MPH and is useful in snow, rough roads etc. If you move the transfer case lever into Low Range you get an additional inch of height for off road clearance. If the model year is equipped with VSC then the VSC system turns off.

One important thing to remember about the transfer case lever. If it is put into neutral the LX can roll down a grade because it over rides the transmission while it is in Park. It is a good idea to set the hand brake anytime you leave the vehicle running in case this happens. I have seen people almost run over this way that didn't realize this would happen.
