Default Which is better?

I am recently going to change the wheels on my 1997 LX450 but was wondering which diameter is better, 18" or 20"? Which has a better ride? Which has more pros? Let me know.....anything would be appreciated. Thank you in advance

Personally, I like my 16" rims with GoodYear MTRs...

But I don't think that's the look you're going for.

If you're after a dramatic change, I doubt you'll be too happy with the 18"s. Not all that different in size from stock. 20s should do the trick for you -- 22s might be too much, IMHO.

I've read that going to 20s and above is a mistake. The wheels are very heavy, and causes strain on the drivetrain, and generally degrade performance overall. So if your goal is to improve the handling, I'd say 18" is probably the best compromise. Of course, if looks is what you're after, then that's a different story.

Default 20 inch wheels

Looks is the only reason to go to 20 inch wheels, isn't it?

I think you're right. I want looks but don't want to sacrifice the handling....I think I should go up to 18". The new LX470s have 18".....They look good. What do you think?

I have an '04 LX470. I am not that crazy about the 18" wheel design, although I think they give an excellent ride quality. I'm a fan of HRE wheels, and looked at the HRE web site to see if they offer wheels for the LX470. Apparently they don't, but maybe they could be talked into it. If I were going to 20 inch wheels I'd go for "forged" wheels as opposed to "cast" wheels, because forged wheels supposedly weigh less. Of course, forged wheels cost a lot more than cast wheels. (In the case of HREs, figure on paying over $1000 per wheel.)

Does anyone know about the ride quality on 18s? What about 20s? Let me know. Thanks!

Like I said, the ride quality is excellent on 18s. Don't know about 20s.

I've ridden on the 18", and they're fine (my LX470's are on 16"). 18" looks good too--probably the best compromise bet. on-road performance and ride. The main reason we haven't switched to the 18" is that we actually take the truck off road sometimes to reach remote campsites, etc., so I really don't want to be worrying about scraping the shiny new wheels. Something to consider if you do go off road, but I think we're one of the few people who actually take the truck off road, let alone dirt road!

I take mine off-road some times. Here's a pic of mine at Little Sluice on the Rubicon Trail.

You'll get a better ride with the 18s, but more bling-factor with the 20s. With either, performance will suffer a bit. It'll take a bit more energy to get started from a stop. If you don't care about that...go for it.

LX470 wheels won't go on the LX450. LX470 has 5 lug design, while the LX450 has 6. Interestingly the new GX470/4Runner's have 6 lug designs. But they're only 17inchers.

I haven't tried myself, but I've read that the GX470 wheels will not fit the LX450. Although they're both 6-lug, I guess there's some rubbing on the brake caliper.
