Unhappy Saying Goodbye to The LX470 forum

Hi all,

I just want to say my goodbye. After owning an used 2003 LX470 of 5 months, I decided to traded in for an Acura MDX. I think the LX470 is a great SUV, but with the gas prices going up I decided to trade in my LX for a loaded MDX. I still own a 98 LS400 which I will take to my grave with me. :-) Good luck everyone.

How much worse on gas was your LX470 compared to your LS400?

With the LS400, I can get close 17 miles between city/highway. The LX470 mix of city/highway is about 11 to 12 miles per gallon. I took my LS400 on a 400 miles trip once and I averaged over 22 miles per gallon. The best I got with the LX470 was 16 miles per gallon on all highway.

Hmmm. That is about 40-50% worse on gas I guess. Outside of the gas consumption, how does that Lexus SUV compare to the sedan for road trips? Is it so much slower in around-town driving that it bugs you after having been in the much quicker sedan?

The speed doesn't bother me at all. I'm not looking to use the LX470 to race or anything. I think the LX470 has a top notch interior, gas is the killer.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I really love my GS400 but that LX470 is darn tempting.

Do you drive the LX470 enough to justify the purchase of an MDX?

I also complain a lot about the gas mileage on my Land Cruiser, but the cost of trading in and buying another car doesn't justify the increase in gas mileage. For instance, if I were to trade my 13mpg Land Cruiser for an 18mpg SUV, I would only save $436 at 12,000 miles per year, and $1.70 per gallon. I would surely lose at least a couple of years of that gas money savings in the dealer trade. Despite the hype about high gas prices, we're still lucky compared to people in Europe who pay absurd prices for fuel.

I tend to use my 540i or SC300 (which get better mileage) for daily work commuting, and save the big rig for long road trips, snow driving, whenever I need the space. I imagine a lot of other multiple car SUV owners do this too.

I know how you feel about gas, but there isn't much I can do since we need an SUV in the household and it would be too expensive to add another car. I have to commute to school every morning and commute home every evening during rush hour. It's going to be worst when I start my job where the commute could be up to 3 times the distance in rush hour traffic!!!
I wish they would make a hybrid LX. I think that should be coming within the next decade or so since Toyota has that hybrid Highlander now.

This thread is one that my wife needs to read. This winter we will be selling our 1993 Ford Explorer with over 188k miles on it for another Lexus. After looking at prices it seems that a 2001 CPO LX is the same price as a 2003 GX, and both of those are about the same price as a CPO 2002 SC430 (w/ approximately 35k miles on it). Yes, I know the SC430 is a COMPLETELY different vehicle than the LX and GX, but we have no children at the moment do not plan on having any for the next 2-3 years. In my mind, I cannot imagine owning a vehicle that gets such lousy gas mileage on premium fuel like the LX and GX when it's just the two of us and our two dogs. If we did it my way, we would purchase a CPO SC430 for about $43k-$46k and just make a reservation with Enterprise Rentals whenever we need a goliath SUV for people hauling or yard supply runs. Our current Lexus is my SC400 which I absolutely love. That would be really neat to see a generation I and II sitting in the garage. I am afraid that SC430's fuel consumption advantage would be diminished by the tire replacement costs at intervals as low as 15k miles. What do you all think? My wife has eliminated the GS (not sure why), IS (too small), ES (thought we'd be better of buying a Camry), RX (thinks it's ugly, but better than the last RX), and the LS is my next vehicle which she thinks is a "grandpa" vehicle.

You should not have sacrificed happiness because of a temporary economic issue. I will refrain from mocking your personal spending as this is not that type of forum.

You will miss the LX.

MDX eh..Well their wounderful SUV's I think you'll like it, but coming from an LX will be an adjustment i.e. smaller / smaller / inferior interior/ dealer service / no real towing if at all / little off roading if at all, nasty Bose system, trying to locate your MDX from the sea of other MDX's in a mall parking lot
.
The benefits, gas as you say, much much better Navi, much more power, better insurance and your objective being met.
