You don't have to disconnect the battery for brake job, data system controller or dvd/navi bypass harness. I can guarantee 100%. However, for the brake job, don't open the door until you finish the job. Have fun!

If you want to avoid pushing the brake fluid back up into the modulator you will have to open a bleeder screw and push the fluid out that way. I guess this car will notice the loss of pressure and cause you all sorts of problems, but if you disconnect the battery you avoid that. At least that's what I've read.

You do not HAVE to disconnect it. However, the following notes and caution are quoted from the procedure for doing the brakes. I'd suggest that if Lexus thinks you should do it, you might want to. You don't have to, but if you chose not to, and you foul up, well.....

---------------
NOTE: While the battery is connected, even if the engine switch is off, the brake control system activates when the brake pedal is depressed or the door courtesy switch turns on. Therefore during servicing of the brake system components, do not operate the brake pedal and open/close the doors while the battery is connected.

CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.

NOTE: After the engine switch is turned off, the HDD navigation system requires approximately 6 minutes to record various types of memory and settings. As a result, after turning the engine switch off, wait 6 minutes or more before disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
