DIY Adjusting Trunk Torsion Tension
I was having problems opening and keeping open the trunk lid when parked on even the slightest of inclines. It would either not stay open or start beeping on its way up and just give up. I remembered on my old GS400 that there was a tension adjustment whether or not you had the factory spoiler installed. So, I took apart the trunk of my LS600 and found the same setup. Now the trunk opens and stays open even on hills. Here is how you do it.
Remove rear panel where the access for the rear AC and Hybrid battery are. Note that the rear dome light must come unclipped as well as several push in fasteners. (Rear panel may not need to come off but it makes things much easier and doesnt take too long)
Remove cover for battery
Pull up tabs for tie downs and remove 10mm bolt. One on each side
Remove right side panel by amplifier. There are several push clips as well as a hook for the rear cargo mat.
Now we have access to the whole rear AC and battery as well.
Notice the torsion bar has 3 oval adjustment notches. Mine came set on the lowest of the three. To increase the tension, pull the bar out and up and hook it on one of the 2 higher slots.
I decided to go with the highest setting
All you have left now is to test and make sure that it will still raise and lower correctly. Once you verify that it does, re-install all the panels that were removed and enjoy your correctly functioning trunk lid.

Thanks for this as I have this problem if my car is parked on the driveway which has a slight incline.
The only thing that concerns me is what are the drawbacks to increasing the tension. There has to be some drawbacks otherwise they would all be set like this from the factory.

I did this mod on my LS460 about 4 months ago and LOVE it. Now when I pop the trunk, it opens up ALL the way by itself, which is nice when you have an arm full of groceries.
