Default Techstream Question

I purchased one of the Techstream kits off of Amazon.

Loaded it on an older laptop with XP-Pro operating system, and the interface loads without error.

Trying to connect to the car is a different story.

When I run the "cable test" (working from memory here - may not be an exact description of the menu choice), the tests for 12v+ and 12v- come back green - everything else is red.

I'm wondering if I've got a bad cable, or maybe I should try a different USB port on the laptop (this unit is so old it may actually have a USB1.1 port as well as USB2.0).

Anyone encountered this error before and if so, what was the solution path?

Appreciate any suggestions.

I think the drivers are installed correctly...

When I plug the cable into the laptop, it sounds the USB recognition tone, and the device appears under the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" list in the Device Manager:

If I select the item from the list and browse to the driver details, this is what I see:

Click the image to open in full size.

Always try a different usb port, but try reinstalling the software again as well.

Are you running a cable test in techstream or with the software that came with the cable?

Is your system 32 bit or 64? I have had similar problems a few months back. Turns out you have to use a 32 bit system for the drivers to work correctly. Not sure this is your problem but let me know. U can find out what version youre running by right clicking on my computer and selecting properties.

The aftermarket cable they sell for us to use with techstream isn't nearly as fast as the ones they use at the dealership. I don't think I have ever run a cable test but I have used techstream many times and it works fine so maybe its the data transfer rate affecting the test? Have you even tried just connecting to the vehicle and just looking at the ECUs?

I tested it this morning. Connected the cable to the PC, and to the ODBII connector inside the car.
Booted up the PC and turned the car on (two presses of the start button).
Once the Techstream interface came up, I selected Connect to Vehicle - this is the display that results:
Click the image to open in full size.

After about 20 seconds, the PC beeps and this button appears at the bottom of the screen (sorry for the rotated image):
Click the image to open in full size.

Clicking on it does nothing. Right-clicking opens this menu (sorry for the rotated image):
Click the image to open in full size.

Selecting Close causes the Connect screen to disappear, and Techstream is locked up at that point. Clicking anywhere on the interface returns a Beep. Have to use Task Manager to kill the application.

Starting Techstream again, using the Cable diagnostics, I get this far:
Click the image to open in full size.

After waiting about 4 minutes at this screen, this message appears:
Click the image to open in full size.

When you click OK - Techstream closes.

Here's the version of the software:
Click the image to open in full size.

I tried manually connecting, specifying Lexus, LS460, 2007 Model year. After the engine field is selected, the manual selection screen just closes.

I've tried the cable in different USB ports on the PC with the same results.

I'm thinking about trying an earlier version of Techstream...

Any other suggestions?

Thanks - I'll have a look.

However, as I noted previously, this is installed on a 32-bit XP box, so I fail to see how X64 installation instructions will be of use.

Regards

The instructions go through a manual install of the drivers. Just substitute your x86 drivers instead of x64 drivers.

yeah. there is the USB driver which is unique and then the Techstream driver which appears to piggy back over the serial port drivers which seems to work on both x86 and x64. On x64, those piggy back drivers don't install properly. that shows you how to manually install it. I suspect that you have the same problem on your x86 XP where the extra drivers weren't installed.
