9.1 Qts 5K mi Oil Change
My 07 LS 80 k mile has been serviced by the dealer all its life prior to me buying it. I have had two GS 300s and a host of other cars. 9.1 qts of oil at 5,000 mile intervals seems excessive. Thoughts and practices. I do my own oil changes and have eight cases of 0W-20 from a Jag I sold.
Thank you.
Thank you.

I perform my own oil changes as well. The only way to know is to get an oil analysis done at the 5k interval. I believe I read an old post here where someone used Mobil 1 and it didn't hold up as well as I would have liked, I doubt it wouldn't have made it to 10k miles. Toyota synthetic oil from what I understand is tailor made oil from Mobil one which has a lot of Molly in it.
Could it be that the 1UR-FSE is hard on oil or could it be that the 0w-20 oil is too light and it's not so much about the tight tolerances but trying to meet CAFE standards and as a result the oil needs to be robust with anti-wear additives and frequent oil chance intervals.
I personally would like to try Pennzoil Platinum because I believe it's one of the best oils on the market based on oil analysis trends.

Just my opinion but I have seen Toyota go retroactive on engines that were using 30wt oils to 20wt oils and I believe it is mainly for energy conservation then actual engine protection. The robust oil formulation from Toyota is probably a cheat that works when counting beans but I'm not entirely sold.
The Pennzoil Platinum is not pure synthetic as we know it, its a group 3 however it's formulation is superior to many pure synthetic oils and the trends I have seen on other engines is what is making it popular in the circle of people who know.
My next oil change is going to consist of 5 quarts of 5W-20 PP and 4 quarts of 5W-30 PP and then I plan to monitor oil consumption. I believe going a little thicker might actually be better in terms of better protection and reducing engine noise.

I just had an oil change with synthetic and they still put the sticker for 5k to return. I am going 10K. My wifes sienna goes 10k so my LS will too. I think the dealer is playing games

Just wanted to add this because I was just in for my 5k service. (It's a 2013) The oil was not changed. After a conversation with service I was told the interval is 1 year or 10 K. Looked at the 2014 manual and it has been changed. (I did have them change the oil.)
Drafted an email to the service manager asking if an addendum/change was coming for the other years and have yet to receive a reply.
Anyone else run in to this?

Oil Change
I have used Lexus service as well as Toyota Service in California and Delaware/Maryland. Yes, they do use full 0-20 oil. However, they do not always use Toyota oil. That is what they sell in the parts department. In the service department they generally use bulk oil, because it is cheaper. They will use which brand that meets the specs, that is lowest in cost. I know in California they used Quaker State where I received service. My Toyota dealer uses Mobil One in my 4RUNNER, but the Lexus dealer here does not specify which they use.
