Hi!

I own a 2009 Lexus LS 460 L awd. It's time for me to buy a new car and I'm thinking about buying my car because I have taken such good care of it and it's in such great shape.

The dealership is telling me that at 100,000 miles the car becomes very expensive to maintain.

I'm not sure if they're telling me that because they're afraid I will keep my car and drive it for anpother year rather than buy a new car or because it's true.

I have 78,000 miles and I've taken very good care of the car. Their only offering me $28,000 and for that money I might just buy it,

I do not want to buy it if it is going to become expensive to maintain at 100,000 miles.

Can any of you tell me if you drive your cars over 100K and how many things break.

Naturally, the more miles on a car coupled with age increases the chances for things breaking. However, that does mean that it will. As far as preventative maintenance and general service there should be no big difference in price. Do not listen to dealer hype!. Make it an independent decision. If you are moving from a well maintained vehicle and going for another used vehicle where you do not know the maintenance history, I would stick with what you have. If your car becomes problem prone, then I would be looking to move up.

@philj, I own a 08 ls600 and i currently have 111k miles on it however i didnt purchase it brand new but the previous owner that had the car had it serviced every 5k miles as recommended in the owners manual (i have a complete copy of all the service records since it was serviced at the same lexus dealer in which i purchased it from). Since i've had the car the only thing that i have done was continued to keep up the regular service, which is not that expensive pretty much oil changes; its just routine. I think that the dealer is just trying to scare you into purchasing a newer vehicle but IMO if the car is not giving you any trouble and you have been keeping it serviced as recommended then i say keep it unless you just wanted a newer car. Plus the fact it a Toyota those things are built for LIFE!!!!!! lol

You mean simply keep it and buy another new one? If so, definitely. They are going to make a bundle on your trade in.

Where do you think the cost is in your LS? The chrome badges? No. The cost is in the components that comprise the car. If (and WHEN) these components fail, you will have to replace them. You will have to spend exorbitant sums to do so. Simple really: expensive cars are expensive to maintain. Does that surprise you?

My question is not; "Are the repair costs reasonable". Instead, I am wondering if other member agree or disagree that the car begins to fail at 100,000 miles.

Others have suggested above that it does not fail at 100K

I asked them for 32,000 on a trade in and they agreed. I have taken very good care of my car and I have friends who what to buy it but if I trade it in I save on sales tax.

Now you are talking about saving on sales tax, when your original question was about maintenance cost over 100,000.

Why do you suppose the highest mileage CPO warranty you can get is 125,000? I'd assume the vendors know their cars the best, and know when they'll be too expensive to maintain. At least it probably gives you a ballpark to set your expectations.

I've had a couple Lexus cars upwards of 200k miles. To me the biggest fear on the LS460 is the control arms. My independent mechanic (prior Lexus master tech, has a 00 LS400 himself) says he personally would not buy a 460 to keep a long time because of the cost of replacing them.

Engine, transmission, etc are going to be bulletproof. You'd think electronics would be a problem, but they really don't seem to be. My old 03 ES has 170,000 miles and is still in the family. Only repair I ever did to it was control arms at about 150k, and the family member that has it now put an alternator in it about 6 months ago. Thats all.
