My newly bought 2012 LS460, or my BMW or Acura were not able to learn the rolling code of my new Chamberlain whisperdrive garage door opened with battery backup. After spending countless hours trying to make the car learn the remote control code, I called Chamberlain support.

They told me that the Chamberlain frequencies are not compatible with the Homelink frequencies installed in most cars (in my case: 0212, 2006 and 2003 models). You need a signal repeater that translated the Car's Homelink signal to a signal Chamberlain can understand.

Programming is a 2 step process.

1: Plug the repeater into a wall outlet close to the garage door opened. First clear all homelink codes by pressing the two outer buttons simultaneously until the red light starts blinking rapidly. Then take the remote that came with the repeater, and hold is right next to, or touching the homelink area. You will need to experiment with the distance. I tried a) touching, b) 2 inch away, and c) 4 inch away. Press the homelink button you want to program, and then press the Repeater remote button. The slowly blinking light will change to a rapidly blinking light. Now your homelink button has learned the repeater remote control code.

2: Now press the learn button on your garage door opener. A steady yellow light will come on. You have 30 seconds to train your garage door opened to the new code from homelink. Go to the car and press homelink button for 3 seconds. The opener lights will blink. Press again two more time for 3 seconds. The door will open and close.

Cautionary note: Step 2 is better done with 2 people. Garage door will open and close, so park your car either inside the garage, or on your driveway. Keep kids away.
