Default 2013 LS 460 vs. Mercedes S550

My pops is in the middle of a touch (but good) decision. He is considering the LS460 but really likes the S550.

He has owned 2 LS's in the past and bought one of the first ones to ever come to Hawaii.

Our family has never owned anything european but a lot of posters here seem to have either owned/leased BMW's Audi's and Merc's.

Can some of you point out the pro's and con's of the 2 choices?

The S 550 many more comfort options and greater street presence.Especially with AMG Pkg.
LS460 very nice and very reliable and less expensive..

If he's will keep the car for more than 4 years,go LS.

One "con" is the Mercedes costs around $20K more.

Has your Father driven each?

I doubt you will have much sway once he has his mind made up.

The S550 is really hot, esp with sport package but old people usually like a smoother ride so that may not be advisable. The S550 is also quite a bit bigger than the LS and longwheelbase LS. I'd get one if money was no object.

Big,big discounting on the '13 S Class now because a new design is coming out in '14.

The S is more car, but is it $30,000 more car is the question. I personally don't think so.

Has he looked at an Audi A8?

After two LS'es I'd want something different.

Actually, I have a lot of sway on this one. Hence I am trying to get some imput on this not being familiar with anything mercedes.

He has driven both and said both are fine.

just like the other poster said if he's going to keep the car for a long time go with the LS460. With S550 one must get an extended warranty. I drove a 2008 S550 for two months and got a good feel for the car. I liked how it looked, how fast it went and how mean it sounded. However I didn't like the navigation system. Coming from a Ls430 the joystick that controls everything didn't do it for me. It's kinda a PITA to use really. Also not a big fan of the shifter that is located on the steering column. Other then that it's a great looking car.

read my review on the s550 (and i had a ls460l before)

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/car...07-ls460l.html

if he keeps the car for a few yrs and change, then it's ok. but i am not sure if i would want to keep the s550 for too long. s550 is dirt cheap now, they are trying to unload everything before the new car is here. on paper it is more expensive (msrp), but if you find the right dealership, they are discounting the s550 so much it won't be too much more from a similarly equipped ls460l.

but still, two cars are pretty different. read my review and you will know

Thanks, nice write up. For me, and knowing he keeps cars for a while, I think the LS leads right now. I do admit that from a total looks perspective, the S takes the cake.

I'm going to test drive both of them too and pretend I can afford it bwaha.

Both Lexus and MB have themselves a monopoly here in Hawaii so discounts are at the mercy of the dealers for the most part. The MB he looked at is coming it right above $90k and the LS right around $75. A lot more stuff with the LS at the price too.

We have about 1-2 months before the shipment of LS's come in to decide. Looking at White with Grey interior. Can't be any more old asian man than that.

I would say LS as well for initial cost and years of ownership

I'd suggest you pop rent a Mercedes before ever considering a purchase. They are different than any Toyota / Lexus in ways that he may not like (and I certainly don't like).

The Benz is obviously more money but you have a lot more options. The ride quality is great along with the exterior styling, I would say much better than the Ls although the Ls is stepping up. The Benz feels more throttle responsive which is always fun, and the handling on the Benz gives you the feeling of being better connected to the road, the Ls just seems a little too smooth but some people like that.. Have never had any issues and I wouldn't expect any no matter which car you get. Both are wonderful cars to have.

I've said this before, I have always wanted to like a Mercedes, but when I sit in one and drive one...I just don't.
