The S Class costs more because it has more comfort options and safety features.

An S Class rides incredibly, no denying that. Its not a "detached" car though, like the LS used to be and today is less so.

Eh...thats not really the case. Lexus has their own issues with tariffs and exchange rates.

I would say material quality on the whole is better with Mercedes than Lexus. My issue with Mercedes is the overall design and feel of their interiors, which I don't care for. Material quality though is excellent throughout their lines. A guy who works for me just bought a C300, interior material quality absolutely blows away an ES or IS. Blows it away. BUT, I don't care for the look, layout, etc.

Yes, I have driven S550 -2010 and on numerous occasions been a passenger in E class 2010-2011-2012 .

I don't like the ride feel nor the seat comfort. Again this is just me.

Regarding Lexus going for more road feel is simple. The Dynamics of the generation have changed. All cars look sharper now and that's what general public wants, now obviously with sharp mean look you have to have some road feel. LoL. Do I like it. NO. Did
I find Lexus LS ride better. Hell yeah. All I say is... When your in sporty mood . take out your IS-F sport. When you want sharp feel with kids. Go out in GS. When it's time for a long comfortable drive with NO kids. Time for LS.

Really you found C300 leather to be better quality? I found it to be cheap with all the course texture on it. No different than What Honda or Nissan puts in maxima.

Anyway to each his own...

Both are excellent vehicles. I have had owned or leased all of the marquis brands. Performance wise, I loved the handling of the Porsche Panamera, luxury wise there is really a gossip between the Audi A8 and the MB S550. Overall quality, ride and price, along with reliability is the Lexus LS460 - hands down. It's the car I have now, and I really have no regrets.

I also prefer the LS, especially for the money, but that doesn't mean the S class rides poorly, it doesn't its just different.

His has MB Tex, not leather, which is a little rubbery, I prefer the NuLuxe in the Lexus.

However, yes I think Mercedes leather is much better than the leather they put in the ES, not the semi-analine leather as is in the UL ES and Luxury GS. Quite frankly, I was appalled by the quality of the leather in the 2013 ES, really mostly the headrests and such which I don't believe are leather any longer. If I couldn't have the semi-analine leather in the ES, I would have preferred the Nu-Luxe.

Overall the materials in the C class are worlds better than whats in the 2013 ES IMHO. No hard plastic at all in the C, everything is nice, padded vinyl or simulated leather. 2013 ES is full of hard plastic in some very obvious places. However, like I said for style and comfort I prefer the ES.

Thats just fanboy nonsense, the S Class is an incredible car, as is everything in this segment. Quality in this segment has improved tremendously, to the point where I really think the LS is hurt by the fact that the 2013 is just a refresh as opposed to an all new model. Everybody is making incredible cars in this segment, the S Class is a great car, as is the 7 series. The A8 is especially a favorite of mine. The new Jag XJ is incredible. All these vehicles are at their core much younger than the current LS, which hurts it IMHO. The S Class is about the same age as the LS, but its all new next year while the LS will need to get some mileage out of the refresh. My guess is 2016 for the all new LS, which means its going to be the oldest vehicle in the segment for at least 2 years.

If I were going to spend $90k on a full sized luxury car...I really don't know if I would get an LS right now. I love the LS, but there are some other really compelling competitors.

to be fair. between s550 and ls460 (had both), if it's something i want to own for more than 6 years, it's probably going to be ls460. not saying s550 will break for sure or ls460 will stay problem-free, but i think ls460 still has a little better build quality overall, especially on electronics.

Without a doubt, for the long haul the LS is the keeper, no question. But, if you're leasing like probably 80% of the buyers in this segment are, its hard to argue with trying out one of the other cars in the segment.

I personally would not choose the S Class or the 7, it would be the A8 or the XJ for me compared with the LS. The S and 7 are just so expensive, and you can still get a really well optioned A8 or XJ for $80k. Of course it would be a 6cyl A8 or XJ vs the V8 LS. If it were my car to retire with and drive forever, the LS would be it.

absolutely agree with you. that's why we got our m3 (lease) and s550 (1 yr and sold)

the price could be deceiving though. although 7 and s usually carry a higher msrp, but if you try to lease the car, most of the time you get very attractive numbers. fwiw, our ls460l msrp was 85k (2007) and at the time, s550 similar equipped was around 105k. yet the lease price of the two cars (similar terms) would be virtually identical, because of the discount and incentives available on the s.

Yep, absolutely true, thats a big reason why you see so many S's and 7's around.
