I apologize. I used the only source of information I had at my disposal, which was an Official Lexus "Tech Tip," dated Sept 2011. It is entitled "Oil Viscosity Applicability and Change Interval Guide." I then had this verified by discussing this subject with my Senior Service advisor (Butler Lexus, Macon, GA) this afternoon BEFORE posting anything. The Lexus Document number is: Tech Tip L-TT-0001-10.

This is unfortunate. And we did check and Lexus, since this document was released, has NOT released any update to the aforementioned document.

You know it doesn't surprise me that you can get two different answers. I'm sure someone else has received a third variation.

I have saved the email from Robert Caldwell, so I am protected even if it is incorrect. However, anyone else not having that assurance in writing should follow the 5000 mile spec. As a lawyer I know has repeatedly said, an oral agreement is not worth the paper its not printed on!

I would just relay on Lexus computer and do changes when it tells. I guess Lexus engineers knew what they did. But sure it can mistake if oil type different.
I noticed some game some car makers do, if they clAim free service, they increase service interval for 15,000 miles as it happened with BMW, and opposite, when Mercedes stopped doing free service, they reduced interval from 12,000 miles to 10,000 or one year what first comes.

My local Lexus Dealership wanted $129.95 to change my full synthentic oil ( 0-20 W) and filter. I cornered a man who works their as a Senior Diagnogstics Technician and he told me to take my car to any Toyota Dealershiip and they would do the same job for much less. I called my "usual" Toyota Dealership and asked to speak to the Service Manager. I told him what kind of car I had, I wanted full synthetic oil ( 0-20W ) and a filter cartrige change, and made sure he knew how many quarts it took. He didn't hesitate to tell me, "We change LS-460 oil and filter all the time, I know exactly what you need, bring it out and let us do it." So, I did. They changed my oil with TOYOTA FULL SYNTHETIC 0-20W oil and changed the filter cartridge. TOTAL PRICE, $69.95, about half of Lexus's price. They put their sticker on my windshield and said to come back a year or 10,000 miles. Toyota oil is Toyota oil, whether you get it at Lexus or Toyota. I'll take a half price oil and filter change any day at a Toyota Dealership. You be your own judge. They acted like they change LS-460 oil every day, and you know, they just might for what Lexus charges.

Default Oil Change

Some of the newer engines call for 10,000 mile change. The LS is not one of them. I brought it up with my dealer and they double checked and said to keep warranty in effect it is still 6months/5000miles. Don't push your luck. Do what the manual states. If you have an engine issue you may regret it if you go past the manual recommendation.

Even if I change my oil every 5,000 miles, it's still TWO (2) oil changes in a year (about) for the price of one at Lexus, if you have a Toyota Dealership do it instead of Lexus. As long as you keep your receipts you are covered. Matter of fact, the Toyota Dealership I had my oil and filter changed at posted in on CarFax reflecting I had it done when, where and at what mileage. Toyota and Lexus are VERY connected.
