LS460 HID Fogs and ballast mounting questions
Been searching for a while and can't find any specifics or a DIY. I know they make a Japan HID projector HID setup, but I plan to just do the aftermarket HID kit since I have a set of ballasts already and just need a pair of 9006 style HID bulbs. I have installed these kits on other cars but haven't attempted on my 460.
For those who have installed aftermarket HID kits for their fogs, here are my questions:
1. Where did you mount the ballast on each side?
2. Is bumper removal required or just access via the fender liner?
3. Any excessive heat issues? especially if using 2500-3000K yellow HID bulbs?
4. Is there a vertical aim adjustment screw for the fog lamps?
5. Side note, can you change the Nike light via fender liner since I'll be working in that space anyway?
Thanks!

if you pull back the fender lining, you should be able to find plenty of spaces or other harnesses where you can zip ties the ballasts to. i don't think removing the bumper is needed. just turn the wheel one way and pull the lining back. most 2is and 3gs people do it that way. i haven't heard of any heat issues so far on those models. and hid are 35w so hopefully not too bad. color temperature on hid bulbs don't affect the heat output that much.
i am not sure if there is aim adjustment on the fogs, never looked into that
and to change the nike light, from my memory, i think you will need to remove the bumper. i can be wrong on this one though

Thanks, it looks like the fender liner is the easiest route, similar to how the GS folks do it...that stupid nike light is something I'll have to do at some point. after seeing some examples on how nice it would look with a pure white LED, I really want to do that too. I have HID fogs on my Acura TL and I can assure you that the basic ebay 3000K yellow HID bulbs put out more heat than the Philips 4100K do. I switched my TL's HID fogs back and forth yellow to white and vice versa a few times and there seems to be more heat being thrown out by the 3000K bulbs. I suspect because of the coating on the bulb glass to get the deep yellow color. I was concerned about the glare shield in the LS fogs, but I assume if they can handle 55 watt halogens, they should be able to handle the 35 watt HIDs. Can't wait to do this, the yellow looks really good on my TL.
As far as aiming the fogs, the 2nd Gen TL's have an adjustment that makes it easy. when you put the HIDs in, they have to be aimed down because they are mad bright..the lenses do a good job of putting light where it needs to go with a nice cutoff, just hope the LS fog optics will do the same

yup, i had a 02 tls before as well so i know about the fog aim adjustment. but on the ls460, i don't know. i can tell you on my old gs400 and is300 (and i believe sc430 as well), i didn't see any aim adjustment. i had hid fogs on the tls as well, 4 "headlights", that was a pretty neat idea

Hi Henry. yes you're right about the Nike lights...the bumper has to be removed. Last time I took my car to Newport for service they had to take the bumper off so they installed them for me. I got some LED's from Japan. I'll post some pics tomorrow when I get back from San Francisco.

I wish I could afford the real deal HID projector setup like Japan, but my kit will cost me $35 with bulbs and ballasts. Used this ebay seller for a couple years and they work great! So, $35 kit with stock non projector fog lenses it is

I can't wait to see these pics of the Nike light..it seems like the brighter the bulb, the farther it glows into the nike shape or is that just an illusion I am seeing on some of the pics I have seen here on CL? Either way, hyper white 4300K LEDs look better than the dull **** color our nike lights have now
