Attach Update Cable ??
I noticed a menu option (NAV/ML System) that referenced updates to the map and CDDB. When I select that option next screen says to attach an "update cable to the vehicle" ?? Think the CDDB is on the HDD ??
Anyone want to take any guesses how this one will work ?? Or what the "lexus" tax will be on upgrades ??
On a somewhat related note, when the dealer changed some of my personal options, the official Toyota "SCAN TOOL" is now a tablet PC with a interface module strapped to the bottom. Think that is how they will deliver updates ?? Or something the users can upgrade ??

The Lexus tech I talked to said that the update cable is attached to a port somewhere under the steering wheel/driver's foot well area. You could probably do it once a year if you wanted to get your NAVI data completely up to date, and I'm pretty sure a fee is involved. It would be similar to the DVD updates for past older NAVI systems.

According to my Lexus tech rep, the navigation update will be offered once a year just like before - of course Lexus and the dealer will charge for the update which is done via the laptop with a per update USB thumb drive that holds the license. CDDB updates are supposed to be available once per quarter - again through the service laptop - and although I think the CDDB update is free from Lexus the dealer will likey charge to install it.

The Nav updates are done with a Nav Update tool at Lexus. It's an external hard drive that downloads the Nav Update into the car thru a firewire connection. Those updates are still not free. When updates are available you can buy a USB key that unlocks the nav update tool so the tech can download the nav update into your car. So instead of buying a disc, one disc is sent to the dealer, they download it into the nav update tool. Then you buy a USB key (64mb flashdrive) that unlocks the download.
The CDDB is a free update. It uses a program called "Gracenote". The CDDB is a partition on the HD. That update is downloaded with the same Lexus tool. I think the updates are every six months.
