Default Some airbags optional, why?

Why would a 60K vehicle have 2 of its airbags optional (assuming the rear side bags)? Seems a bit stingy in this class.

The car comes with eight standard airbags, including knee bags for driver and front passenger, and can be ordered with up to 10, as well as a pre-collision occupant-protection system.

I thought the IS had something crazy like 13 airbags standard. And it's a much smaller car, too. That's odd that the LS has fewer standard airbags (if it does) than an entry level model...?

Maybe it's optional because of the Executive Rear Seats. If you're reclined and you're hit from the side, the rear curtain airbags may be useless...

Default Extra for the knee

I believe I read that there is an extra airbag if you get the executive package for the knees. I guess if you are reclined, you need more protection.

Hopefully that's the reason, the ES 350 comes with 9 standard airbags. Rear side airbags are optional.

Only airbags that are optional (from what I have read) are the door mounted rear side airbags.

it depends on how you are counting it.

If ES comes with 9 airbags, then LS comes standard with 10 airbags. And you can get extra rear side airbags optional - these are not found in smaller models at all, they are pretty new development, and I think related to what option package/seats you get...

Optional on the ES350 as well but not on the other models if I recall correctly.

I assume it would be door mounted. I cant see how it would be seat mounted in the rear seat. I know its door mounted in the ES.

7 airbags. I think curtains would count as one whole piece (i.e. two side curtains, not 4). I'm not sure why people like to count it as two (maybe cause it sounds better cause the car has more bags). dual front, dual front knee, dual front seat-side, side curtains and optional rear side for a total of 10.

Default They are more airbags than you can count....

The ES350 comes with 8 airbags and 2 optional side airbags next to the rear doorjams.

The LS has the same configuration except if you get the Executive recliner which has its own airbag in the seat cushion to resist your forward motion while reclined. This would be a possibility of eleven. The rear side airbags are included in the Comfort Plus package along with power rear seats and headrests. The rear seats have climate control also in this LS460 package. In the 460L it comes with the Luxury package which adds Ecsaine headliner and Semi-aniline leather to the mix.

The IS has 8. The GS350 has 10. Seatbelt pretensioners are electric motor driven and common to all outboard seat positions on all of the sedan models.
