01 LS charcoal canister
Does anyone know the R and R procedure? I heard that you may have to remove the right axle which makes no sense to me. Thanks.

Thanks but I have an 01. Has the Ultra package and the canister is in the rear. Getting P0446, 0441, 0440 and smells like gas at rear of car. Has 230,000 miles on it so sure the charcoal is saturated. I'm told it is above the right rear axle.

Take the hose off leading to the canister at the engine side and the canister side and blow out with compressed air to make sure no charcoal particles have leaked into the system. If the line is clogged, you would be seeing EGR codes. I've had success on other cars placing a screen filter in that line to prevent particles from reaching the valve. The correct fix however is to replace canister if it's leaking and blowing out the system.

Bump.
Has anybody actually replaced the charcoal canister on an LS430, or is it a signal of end of life of the car?
I need to replace the charcoal canister assembly on my 03 LS430. I looked at the pdf images that were provided, and it says to remove the RH drive shaft (not the axle). That might not be too hard, will look for those procedures, but want to verify that is all that needs to be removed to get to the charcoal canister.
Thanks,
Andy

I have the PO440 code forever, most likely in need of the canister. My Indy told me it’s a huge job and no need to repair for any emissions requirements. It’s not getting replaced.

Fill the gas tank completely. Reset the code with a scanner or disconnect the negative battery cable. Drive the car so the other monitors can reset. A day or two of driving should do it. Make sure the fuel level stays above 3/4 as this will prevent the EVAP test from running. You can refuel if needed. You'll pass your emissions test as long as everything else is good. In Maryland, as in many other states, you can pass emissions without the EVAP monitor running. You can verify with a scanner. If it only has 1 incomplete monitor you'll be fine.
