The IG2 relay is in a J/B in the engine compartment near the driver-side headlight. It’s not difficult to replace (roughly as difficult as adding motor oil to your engine). 1.5 hours seems excessive, unless the majority of that time is spent “diagnosing” where IG2 relay is located, which makes me wonder how much “diagnostic” time you really received for your $675.

To comfort myself that something in this process made justifiable monetary sense, I researched the service advisor's statement that the relay replacement labor was justified because the relay was located in “difficult location”, however; my findings do not support that.

Thanks to StanVanDam & rkw77080, I located the relay I believe was replaced. It is conveniently located in the No.1 Relay Block positioned at the right front corner of the engine compartment. Accessing this Relay Block and replacing the relay couldn’t take more than a minute or two, not 1˝ hours.

Verification includes the fact this light blue relay looks clean and new compared to the other relays in the block and has the same part number as listed on my invoice. I have attached a photo of what was said to be a difficult location to access.

Does anyone know, is it possible there is another such relay located elsewhere on the car?

The saga continues…

I even went to the dealership to try to get some touch up paint for my car, after rolling the fenders and they are a bit rippled and has some paint chipping on the inner wheel well, not much more then a couple hours work for any decent body shop, for laughs I asked for an estimate.

They gave a huge song and dance how they have to spray half of my car because the paint needs to be blended in etc... and I got a written estimate for like $1600.00+ to repair a few light ripples in my rear fender arches lol

I didn't even tell them that I do body work myself, and that I would be doing it myself when I had the time, I just smiled and said thanks.

Jabberwock is right in his approach , but don't be surprised if they just flat out dismiss you, these people ARE con artists, and theres really only one way to deal with them in my opinion, but good luck im sure ull figure it out.

Each fuse and relay is uniquely named for positive identification. There's only one relay named "IG2", which is the one you've found in the engine compartment.

That is a .5 hour job if quoted by actual work time. And the only thing "difficult" about the location of that relay is the difficulty the service manager is going to experience in justifying 1.5 hours labor to replace that relay.

Although it may just be the standard labor rate for that part based on the book - in which case you should ask to see the specific entry that specifies 1.5 hours labor for that part.

Based on your report of being told labor was high because part being in a difficult location, the service writer has lied to you in a particularly egregious manner. That is absolutely unacceptable in business. If I myself were dealing with this issue and meeting with service manager or dealership owner, I would insist that this dishonest service writer not even be allowed in the same room as we moved forward. I you are 100% sure this is what you were told I would actually consider asking the dealership for a formal written apology. They also need to take some kind of action on employees that attempt to lie and deceive customers with impunity.

Ron, maybe if you buy em some donuts they'll do better work next time. (that's a joke from another thread - don't do that!).
As others have said the dealership took advantage of you and the position you were in, do all you can to get as much of it back as you can. This is how the dealer makes almost all of their profit. NEVER use any dealer for your routine maintainence, it's an absolute ripoff. I can't believe you let them do a "5K service" for over $200 - even more of your hard-earned money in their grubby hands. That was a $256.78 oil change! Do your own oil changes and after a year you'll have paid for one of these 'ripoff' episodes where they charge you $800 in diagnostic fees and over $200 in labor to replace a relay.

Default had an issue with ecm

not with not being able to start,
if the ecm was bad you probably had a vsc light come on,
when it does and they diagnose it should have a code in the computer that shows a failure in ecm
mine showed ecm failure and a vvti code
they reset it and car has been fine
also if the ecm is bad its an expensive part consider finding one from a junk yard and will probably sell it to you for 500 thats worth a gamble over the 1500 at dealer w discount,
instead of randomly changing other parts have someone diagnose it properly and repair just whats needed
safe driving

Ron,

Thanks for the update, dam, a $21 part ? Keep us updated on what happens. Customers of a car like this should not be treated like this and at a rate of $125 an hour, expect the best techs and the highest quality of service.

What relay was it? I am havin a rough idle-stall/stumble at low throttle issue. Snapon and techstream scanners wont connect to ecm(can read body, tcm and abs computers) performed ALL of the resistance and voltage checks on the maf, tps, throttle motor, cam sensors, alternator is putting out 13.7 at idle(with the rough/low idle), unbolted each coil while running and was able to hear the "snap snap" of the coils firing, all plugs are new.

I work a 7 on 7 off shift donuts either myself or one of my VERY trusted mechanic friends that are goin over the car.
