Default Nav upgrade 2001 to 2005....Worth it ?

I've been looking but, I can't find the exact info or images on this upgrade, besides it being a little faster, what real changes are there on the 2004-2006 GEN4 system ?

I have a 2001 LS430 with Navi...

I know the GEN4 is a plug and play on the GEN3 harness so this should be a simple swap.

1. Are the mapping or menus different ?
2. Is navi with it more accurate and better results when finding a location ?
3. Is it really that much faster ?
4. If it looks the same, is there any major features to make it worth going to ?
5. IS it possible (if so, how) to get Bluetooth support by replacing the DVD/Navi Drive ?

I have been looking and last year vendors were asking $600+ for them but, now the prices have dropped quite a bit for used ones.

My 2001 works fine but, I wanted something a newer look and something that would has better logic in mapping than the 2001 has...With out changing the look of the car (3rd party kits I wont even look at)

The BIG question....My 2001 works fine (still 2003 maps) IS it worth the upgrade? I do plan on keeping my 2001 for another year or 2 before looking to upgrade something.

Can a GEN5 fit in a 2001 by chance (that should give a whole new look) ?

If I could get Bluetooth, that would be EPIC but I am not counting on it..

Thanks in advance !!!!!

Not worth it at all. I the newer maps and still never use it. Between my Garmin or my phone it's light years ahead. If you upgrade, go aftermarket.

Will not change the look of the care so "after market" is not a option that will go with. Who as done the upgrade, was it worth it ?

Why would you spend money and time to upgrade to a 10 year old NAV system? I love the LS430 but the LS430 NAV is completely obsolete technology - a joke at this point. Would you spend money and time to use a 10 year old cell phone or laptop?

I still use the Nav in my 03. Works pretty well most of the time, on the rare occasion it can't find an address I use my phone. I'd never consider upgrading it. I know there are at least one, maybe two upgrades available for it. Not worth it.

Ok, though it might of been a ok upgrade, though outdated tech but, a less than the current system.

Seeing that I could get a 2005 Navi disc drive for around $100-150 with a disc with some hunting figure it might be worth it. I do still use it, on the case it cant find something (2003 maps), I use my Windows Phone device..

Just wondering if it would be worth the upgrade but, I'm getting the general thing here, don't bother...I guess if I want a newer Navi system, upgrade to a 460 or replace with after market (and that wont happen).

With this all being said, I will have this car for AT LEAST another year or 2, and I can sell my current DVD Navi drive for close to what I pay for a GEN4 one.... Will it add any real functions in map viewing or color changes in the menu that MIGHT make it worth it ?

Those brown menus are driving me nuts....

I still use my 2005 maps, major highways have not changed but it should always be crosschecked with your phone mapping apps for new construction. In the 05 system you can change the colors to blue, green and 2 other choices.
If you are looking for firmware updates an 05 map data update will not provide worthwhile changes. Get yourself a $100 Garmin

I'm considering getting a NAV DVD update for my 2005 LS430. I hear it's the same disc used by the 2004 - 2006 Toyota Camry?

It is currently around $136 from Sewell:

PT219GEN0413/U28 for 2013
In Store: $185.90
Online: $136.00
(Forum Discounted): $136.00

I also have a Magellan Roadmate and an Android phone with Google Maps.

While the latter 2 are superior to the built-in NAV, I would pay this price for the update because I tend to use the car's NAV most often, without having to balance things on the dashboard. It is annoying when the car's NAV takes me most of the way, then hits new areas/developments that are not in the old map. That's when the newer Magellan comes to the rescue. I've also damaged the battery in an older Smartphone by putting it on the dashboard and using Google Maps: the direct summer sunlight caused the phone to overheat and the battery started bulging. And the phone shut down in the middle of navigation because of that. Smartphones are not designed to take the heat on a dashboard.

I've asked a local dealer for a quote to I install it. I guess they don't like it when you tell them in your initial written request for a quote what price you can get the DVD for from Sewell/Amazon, so maybe that's why they haven't replied yet. The installation sounds simple, but with my kind of luck, I'll probably mess up the DVD player or connections, and ruin the whole thing, if I try to do it myself. I'd rather pay the dealer to take that risk.

PT219GEN0412/U27 for 2012 might be cheaper.

I have version 12 map on my 04 and I seldom use the build in nav. I use my iPhone instead, much easier and it lets you input destination while the car is moving. Not worth it IMHO.

My 02 nav died and upgraded to a a Prius nav system....if mine had not would not have upgraded but having the nav works makes the car feel propper, can't explain it ..I use my phone most of the time for nav as traffic is updated live but always have the car one running to so when phone loses service or I take a call I can still stay on course.

The original 2005 Nav system in my LS430 allows you to use one of the 5 Quick Location icons to change/re-route destinations *while the car is moving*. I have my home and work location programmed there. Is this feature still available in the newer map upgrades?

For people who posted here I wanted to follow up with this. I ended up doing this. My 2001 setup had 3.1 disc in it (2003). So I went on ebay, found one for $125 with a disc(made an offer to someone), It was a 12.1 disc (yea a lot newer than mine). The manufacture date on the drive I picked up was Nov 2006.

I ended up taking my 2001 Disc drive and Disc, put them back up on ebay and got $280 for it.. So I upgraded and pocketed $125 or so after fees and crap.

Thoughts...
1. Different colors are cool but, as soon as I shut off the car, it goes back to it's original color.
2. Voice control no longer works
3. Maps have a texture on them, it looks better, well, maybe just different than I have had for the last 10 years.
4. More options in the menu, nicer layout.
5. It does not change the radio color, wish it changed them both...

Over all, I think the best thing I got was updated maps, the 12.1 disc used still sells for as much as I paid for the whole thing...

Yea, it's quicker to use my phone, as Windows Phone has Cortana and I can just talk to her and she sets up the Navi to go....but, on a long trip to keep an idea on arrival time, I use the in car over the phone....

Default nav update

I purchased the gen4, version 14.1, nav disk from the lexus dealship. They are on sale right now for 100 bucks. Replacing the disk was less than 15 minutes from start to finish. My original version was 4.2, so now i am no longer in fields per my nav screen. The navigation system functions great to me. I have taken many trips using it with the outdated information, so the $100 and 15 minutes of my time for current info was worth it. I could use my phone, but why, when i have a screen at eye level in my dash?
