Default Instrument Cluster Petered Out..Help

Well, I read some past threads, and have come to find out it is fairly common..Before it totally petered out this morning, the needles would bounce around upon start up..A past post had said it was commonly the Instrument Cluster Voltage Regulator. LOL< my local Lexus dealership parts guy, said he had no idea what that part was, and that it was not available..Any leads on this issue would be appreciated!!! Also, the owners manual is not quite clear, about if there is a fuse that nay be applicable...Please advise...Thanks!!!

I would first check the fuse, but the fact it was acting up before it went out is not a good sign.

My wife's Lexus (different model) experienced something similar and the entire instrument cluster had to be replaced, fortunately it was under warranty. The cost would have been something like $900.

A dealership and nearly every service shop is not going to going to do any sort of electronic repair that requires soldering, so the alternative is pulling it out and finding someone that can repair circuit boards or grabbing one from a salvage yard.

If I were in the same situation, I'd probably be looking for one on Ebay or through a salvage yard and swap it out after doing some troubleshooting.

There are plenty of cluster repair facilities around the US. No need to replace when they can be fixed at 1/4 the cost.

Thew way that the background light in the back keeps dimming and acting erratically, It is leading me further down a path to try to investigate the Voltage Regulator for the panel. I would love to hear others chime in, as I have time tomorrow(Sunday), and will probably bust into the dash and investigate.

It's also not common in the LS430. More so on 99 and below LS400.

Strongly suggest that you don't just tear apart the dash and instrument cluster "looking" for something that is an electrical problem. If you know how to use a volt meter, start by testing each circuit on the driver's side junction block (fuse box) to see if voltage changes erratically at one of the fuses. There are relays in the junction block that may be the problem. Fuses in that box relate to the instrument panel and dash.

Never heard of any issues on the LS430. We do repair tons of LS400 clusters 1990-00. The LS430 is getting older now with higher mileage so anything is possible.

We can definitely take a look, test the cluster, let you know what's going on with it, and save you some money repairing yours. Do not buy a new one from Lexus!
