Gas Fill Problem
So , my new(bought it last Friday) used LS 430 cannot take more than 2 gallons at a time. I take to the dealer to do the 90K service. I tell them about the problem.
They called me today that there is a service bulletin saying tha the gas filler needs to be replaced and it will cost $498.
Is this reasonable?
Thanks

Did you get the Service Bulletin number to confirm? Mine does that, the normal handle down towards the ground, then lock in, it many times un-clips itself after a couple of gallons. I just turn the nozzle to 90º to fill and it seems to accept the gas with very little issue. Its like the nozzle senses it full prematurely.

Same here
Mine shuts off too when the nozzle is inserted in the filler right end up like most cars. But, when I insert it upside down, lock it on and stand there making sure it doesn't tip over, it fills perfectly. I can live with this.

The "upside" down thing seems to be with Lincoln Towncars too. I've filled and seen a few time Towncars will up, click off and then the attendant comes back and fills up upside down. Must be that makes the trigger in the pump less sensitive.

Yes there is a Service Bulletin on this issue, the gas tank filler pipe was a bad design, my car did the exact same thing, the pump kept clicking off.
Lexus redesigned the pipe, I got mine replaced and it works perfectly now.
It is suppose to only cover under the normal comprehensive warranty 4 years/50k miles, longer if you got the extended warranty. I took my car in when it was slightly out of warranty at 55k miles or so, I just called Lexus corporate, since it is a known issue, they will most likely cover it for you under good will. They did mine for free.
Lexus customer satisfaction: 1-800-255-3987 You want selection 3.
I got the Service Bulletin # at home, will post when I got it.

Yeah, but he's at 90k...thats a bit over the 50k warranty. Give it a try, but I doubt lexus will help on that one.
What I would recommend if finding a mechanic other than the dealership. They are EXPENSIVE for everything. I wouldn't doubt if you could find this cheaper by 1 or 2 hundred at a regular mechanic.

That is for sure. If Lexus won't help, buy a new pipe online, and have an independent shop do it, or even do it yourself, it is not a difficult job. I was going to do it myself if Lexus declined my request. The pipe sit right behind the rear wheel well plastic liner.
