2006 LS430 oil/filter change
Hi Guys,
Since its freezing here(otherwise, I would do it myself) I decided to get my oil/filter changed at the Lexus dealer yesterday on my 2006 LS 430(79K miles).
When I got home, I noticed on the invoice that they used Toyota synthetic 0W20 for the OCI. I thought you could only use a 5W30 in this V8. Should I call them Monday and make them change it out to 5W30? I am not sure that Lexus allows this weight of oil. Thanks for your help.

Im sure they don't use bottled Toyota 0W20, most likely they used bulk 5W20 if you didn't request synthetic. Most of the time the oil change pn# are in oil change kits, for example, at our dealer we use bulkoil1 as the part# for any 5W20 or 5W30 oils but the tech puts the proper required oil that is marked on the oil cap. Considering how many oil changes my dealer does in a day (often 150ish or more) it would be a pain in the *** to bill out 2-3 diff pn# when its irrelevant as the tech puts in the required oil. We only use the 0W20 synthetic if the customer requests it OR its Toyota Care paid program.

My dealer uses 0W20 syn in all the cars. I researched all over and have decided that Toyota 0W20 syn(a high moly oil) will be fine in the 2006 LS430 and would be a waste to drain and fill with something else. It runs smooth and quiet and I plan on staying with it for now. Thanks guys...

Like I said, I am staying with the Toyota 0W20 synthetic for this OCI but not sure if I will for the next one. I still am not 100% convinced that 0W20 is what's best for this engine. Maybe, Cowboy can chime in with some additional info... Thanks.

I will probably use 0w40 on my next oil change. I use it in all my cars and seems to work well. I have sent it off to be tested at 5k miles and it always shows to have good lubrication properties left. A 0w40 should be thinner when cold which should aid in cold temp start up wear and thicker when hot at least that is my thought. I just don't think there was a commonly available 0w40 when Lexus was reccomending oil for these cars.

I have Pennzoil Ultra 5W30 in my basement but its to COLD here to change it myself. LOL... That's why I went to the Lexus dealer.
Scottryana- 0W40 is too heavy for these cars. I use that weight in some racing applications or even in possibly an older 60's/70/s big block. I may try it this summer in my 1990 Jaguar XJS V12.

What makes you say it is too heavy? It isn't a straight 40 weight, it is a multi-grade oil that when cold has the characteristics of a 0 weight and when hot has the characteristics of a 40 weight. When oil is hot it looses viscoity. Again the 0w40 wasn't available to the engineers during the construction of the UZ motors, and I would be willing to bet they were much more concerned with the low temp characteristics and that is why it is a 5w30 motor oil specified. I will run the 0w40 and get some oil samples done during use, but I am very confident it will be good for this motor.

Interesting info about using 40 weight oil in the ls430. I've strongly considered using 40 weight oil in my 05 due to my very warm weather in SoCal.
From the Pennzoil Oil selector tool:
http://lubematch.pennzoil.com/recomm...e=18&brand=121
Lubricant / Capacity Notes
a. SJ/GF-3 is specified if energy conserving oils are required. Alternative viscosities: 19°F to above 100°F, 20W-50; 10°F to above 100°F, 15W-40; 0°F to above 100°F, 10W-30
It bases the additional weights from the standard 5W-30 on the lowest operating temperatures:
0°F 10W-30
10°F 15W-40
19°F 20W-50
It would seem that is the temp never is below 19°F (like in SoCal) they "recommend" 50 weight oil!
My local mechanic told me that the push towards 5-30, then 5W-20 was mainly due to CAFE standards. I personally would like to know whether I should put in 40 or even 50 weight oil when dealing with my driving weather.

I could be wrong but these engines were probably engineered to tight tolerances and were meant to use what I would term as lighter engine oils. You guys use whatever you want to use. LOL...
My original question was if a 0W20 weight oil could be used in this UZ LS430 engine...
