How long does it take your car to warm up?
Just curious, how long it takes your car to warm up? In the Michigan winter, it takes my '02 UL about 8 to 10 minutes to completely warm up. A little heat begins to appear after 3 to 4 minutes.

If it is operating correctly, the system seals closed at the t-stat so the coolant heats up quickly and begins to provide heat to the passenger compartment in just a few minutes. If you select "Auto" for the ventilation, you'll notice the fan starts up automatically after about 2-3 minutes - even at sub-zero start-up temps. The time it takes to reach full operating temp depends upon engine RPMs - higher RPMs = more & faster heat.

Same here in MN. About 7-8 minutes at 30mph. Much faster if you get on the highway and stretch the V8 legs.
Having driven 13 different cars in MN, the heater on this car is great, once the engine warms. Had two hybrids prior to this, as company cars, and they NEVER warmed up. Heater core could never fully operate with low or no engine temps.

For the temp gauge to reach the first lowest mark it needs about 5 minutes or so. That's when I usually leave, I don't like for my car to warm up a lot, as I've read an article before, that if you exceed warming up time it might cause more damage than good, and it will drink your gas.

I only let my car warm up for about 30 to 60 seconds on our coldest days, which is has been 8 degrees. I don't have a garage. This is when most of the wear happens; cold starts. The real benefit of synthetic and apparently new more advanced silicon anti drain-back valves in certain oil filters. Lubricating those critical parts immediately. In my opinion, it's better for the car to start driving at this point. Obviously, if the car is rather frozen more time may be needed. Idling for extended periods of time will cause carbon building in the engine and exhaust system cat damage.
