Replacing my brake pads--still--and wonder: should you use the red Disc Brake Quiet spray product?

Factory shim kit comes w/ dark gray grease and manual says to put it on the outboard side of the interior shim, that is, between the shims. Nothing about an OTC quieting product.

Lot of members here who've posted say use the spray, which is gummy, on the back of the pad, or on the side of the shim facing the pistons, or both.

Some members appear to use grease in the same place others use the spray, apparently w/ good results, even though the two substances have opposite qualities. The grease is slippery, and the spray is gummy.

I see the factory answer. Is that not the right one? Maybe the red spray is belt and suspenders?

I never had a problem with the original pads, and the replacements, done by an independent, were non-OEM w/ shims and some grease between the single shim and the pistons. Zero noise there as well. I've had other cars w/ squealing brakes and I know its a thing to be avoided. Want to do the same here.

I guess good news is that if I have to pull the pads and reinstall, its easy enough.

I used the gray grease with the factory pads. My thinking was if it came from the factory with the gray stuff, then its good enough for me to replace it with. I have continued to use it with no issues.

I used standard high temp brake grease I got from parts store - applied sparingly between inner and outer shim surfaces..also applied very light coat to backside of the pad. No spray. 15k miles later brakes are dead silent.

I used a brake grease sold at the nearest parts store - "Permatex Ultra Slick Synthetic Brake Lubricant", I reused the shims - just wiped off the old grease and applied new grease to the surfaces indicated in the service manual. Still dead quiet 40,000kms later.

The factory shims combined with the grease is what prevents the brakes from making noise. I don't think there is any need for any other products.
