Yes, the current stock filters have been cut open and analyzed. They are not junk or bad just nothing special. Standard $3 filter. The older one was much better.

i bought my LS from the original owner a few months back and it has been dealer serviced since new. Is it ok for me to switch to synthetic now . I am assuming the old lady did not spend the extra money for synthetic oil when she owned it. After reading this entire thread , I am getting a bit nervous about 13 years of cheap oil filters and dealership mystery oil

I would not worry. The LS430 engines are extremely durable. As long as she was not going 10k miles on regular oil I'm sure it's fine.

aw...wouldn't be nervous at all. If the oil was changed regularly, meaning intervals no greater than say 5k, you're fine.
Sure you can switch to synthetic now but unless your usage pattern is lots of miles in a short period of time, I don't think its worth the extra expense. You get somewhat better gas mileage with synthetic and it does last longer than regular oil but i wouldn't keep ANY oil in my car longer than 6 months assuming some use, even if few miles.

Exactly. I use Ryco filters on my LS430 and they're made in China these days and have never had an issue. The pc's we're all posting from are made in Taiwan after all...

Change your oil AND the filter at 5k km intervals and the engine will last a VERY long time.

hi as long as the car is under 100k, you should switch to mobil 1 extended performance, has double the cleaning agents as mobil 1, and is 27$ for a 5 quart jug in walmart, change the oil every 6500 to 7500 depending on city / highway mix and use the standard toyota filter, if you decide to stretch the intervals buy the mobil1 synthetic oil filter on amazon
safe driving, been mentioning mobil 1 ep for years on the forum i hope people research it its hard to beat, all the penzoil ultra sun fans, i heard of the oil is sometimes too thin and causing some oil burn issues not verified thru reading.

I just ran a engine full of dino versus previously a steady diet of syn. I did not notice any mileage difference.

Not too surprising. Longevity before breakdown and cold start protection are the best aspects of synthetic.

There is a link here to the Toyota filter, cut open. Looks like it has a lot of filter media, metal end caps. What is wrong or deficient with the construction of this filter? If someone had done oil analysis on the older filter and this new filter and established the older model filtered better, well, then that would sure tend to prove the point the older filter was better. But so far, I have not found any such oil analysis reports.

about a half mile to three quarters a gallon difference with synthetic.
the better lubricating less friction = better efficiency
my car averaged 19.3 for 3 years before me and now its up to 19.9 since change and driving
also use nitrous in tires vs reg air, now the last one is debatable i am not sold but makes sense

I use M1 synthetic and a 90915-20004 Toyota filter (made in Japan) and change every 5,000 miles.

I would have noticed the mileage difference you speak of, good for you. I am getting around 24.5 per tankful so I am pleased overall dino or syn.!

it didnt happen thru magic it was reality if you research synthetics with friction reduction almost all the time you will see an increase in efficiency if it was a quarter a mile to the gallon it would pay for itself, and i am in cali and florida which is not a cold start issue i assume your in wi and for cold start lubrication alone its a no brainer
safe driving

and after more thought to the comment dino vs synthetic, i am really at a loss for your logic
if you push regular motor oil to 5k intervals which i wouldn't do unless 90% highway when that oil gets dirty after 3k i would bet your losing 5% fuel economy with dirty oil. i can push mobil 1 ep to 7500 intervals so lets so there was no fuel savings advantage which i don't believe to be the case i can get 50% more to change intervals with absolutely not a thought i am protected in heat and cold. anyone in cold weather climates your number 1 degradation of internal motor parts with wear comes with cold starts. Mobil 1 ep for 27$ gallon at walmart all day long any mobil 1 users switch to the ep twice the synflo with cleaning agents.
safe driving to all
