Default Rear View Mirror w/ Back-up Camera

Has anybody installed a rear view mirror with back-up camera view in an LS430?
What's the best brand?

I had a base RX350 loaner last week with the in-mirror backup camera. I found the poor clarity and small image size made it about worthless. I think a good backup sensor system is better. Maybe other mirror-based systems are better, but I've been spoiled with the big clear screens in my old LS CL and current GS.

I could go with a separate monitor, which would be larger.

Do you really need a backup camera? I find that sensors generally work great for sedans except for very short persons who don't raise their seat up. Generally, I think cameras are best for SUVs & trucks with very limited rear visibility.

You don't have an auto dim function in your rear view mirror?

In our Toyota Yaris 2012 we have a rear camera (this was a standard feature!) but I seldom look at it. It's actually quite useless IMO. At first, I always wanted a camera. I even checked how to add a camera in my LS.

But to be honest, like caddyowner said, good sensors are all you need. Since the camera is only 2D, you can't judge the distance anyway. In our Yaris there are colored lines but you can't trust those lines. Even in the manual it says it's deceiving. When you hit the red line you are REALLY close at the object.

The camera is best just to check if there are no kids running behind your vehicle. The Range Rover Evoque (I love that car) for example, has a very small rear window. The view is as bad as most super cars. In those cases, a camera is a must.

But back to your question. Have you read this?
