so did you ever give a muffler shop a try? what did they quote you? I can understand not wanting to put on after market parts, but for me I have for exhaust in the past and never had a problem. Think about places like midas or something.

I have some friends that have M-series Bimmers. They go to ethanol free stations.

Can the smell clear out some over time?

If you dont have a code for cats DO NOT CHANGE THEM. You are wasting your money. The sulfer smell you are getting is because of the gas quality from the place you are getting. Try switching gas stations.

I've used about 15 different stations. I'm going to wait for a code or brakedown.

I wanted to trade it in for an 06 but no way I can afford it anymore

My 1992 LS400, and 2002 LS430 had/have the stank issue on hard acceleration, seems like the stank always winds up in the passenger compartment regardless of A/C settings, no codes ever set. Dealer could never duplicate the issue, yet I could duplicate upon leaving the dealer.....Go figure.

Don't bypass the cat, it will goof your system. My2c

EASTERN CATALYTIC CONVERTERS Part # 40523, Rock Auto...
The price on Rockauto is $186.78 each. If you put on two at a time and the shop charge you $200 for labor you would be out around $600 total. If you needed to change them out a few times $ 3100 divided by $ 600 would come to 5 times that you could change them, to get to the same price that the dealer would charge. Now do you really think that you would change them out FIVE times in your life time or in the cars life time? Sounds like a no brainer to me...
I have a mechanic friend that has a small shop with a lift, and there all small shop mechanics all over. If I took the car to him with the cats in the trunk, he could, and would, change them out in an hr or two.

Do you really want to sell the car for a $ 600 repair bill? Not sure I get the issue here?

Are you sure you even have a problem? In newer models the OBDII montiors the CAT efficiency with pre and post CAT O2 sensors. The ECU will log an error (P0420 or P0430) if the CAT is deemed not working.

I would never start spending $$$ without looking at the real time signals of the O2's to see what they look like. Get an OBDII interface for your laptop and do some diagnostics before you start spending money on repairs you might not need. For $100 of so you can get all you need to monitor.

Default Catalytic converter mechanic

I was just told I needed to replace the cats on my 2005 LS 430 right after having timing belt changed! All the typical codes came up, so I took it back to dealer to have them checked. Dealer says no rush so I am looking for an honest, qualified mechanic in the North Dallas area ( Plano, Frisco, McKinney etc.) I will get the parts from Rock Auto. Thanks!
