Had to unexpectedly drive from Santa Monica to Tucson (525 miles) today so I took the '02 which had the most gas in it and hit the freeways. Thought I'd have to stop for gas somewhere along the way but as you can see in the photo, (ok, I was bored) I was about 75 miles away from Tucson and my range was another 114 miles!! So that would have given me total miles of about 565 miles on a tank with this big old V8 averaging about 80. What a car!!

ITs amazing to me too. I have also gotten over 500 miles on a full tank, no way that makes any sense but its true.

I average about 25 MPG with my LS per the dashboard display. My sloooow 4-cyl Subaru outback with AWD, old 4-speed slushbox, and the aerodynamics of a brick averages between 23 and 24 MPG.

nice. we traveled to Memphis from Huntsville and back on a full tank with some to spare - 100 degree weather and still managed 25-27 mpg.

The 2012 Nissan GTR ($90k+ sports car) spent big development dollars and lots of time in wind tunnel testing so Nissan could boast about their super sports car having a super low COD - They got it down to .26 and it features in their print ads.

That is the same .26 COD as our giant 4 door LS430s : )

Yep your correct but what is more amazing is the fact that ours was developed in 2001...unbelievable car.

Also, factor in the fact that the engine is only turning slightly above 2k rpms at 80 (you go past 3k in top gear and you're wayyy over the limit....), it's no wonder this thing sips gas on the highway.

It's great be able to go so far on a tank. I get between 450- 525 miles regularly on a tank. My question is why the Millage rang is always so off. Mine never says more than 410 miles. It does say "range over 410." Which is also interesting how it changes to "Range Over" too "Range Approx." But it never changes at the same spot. Could change at 325 or at 375. I keep up with this info for work travel purpose.

Personally I pay no attention to the range calculations. The computer is using how much fuel you have used from it's flowmeter (doubt that it is extremely accurate since the rate changes continously if you are in less than steady state conditions) and how you have been (or are now) driving. With that information it must determine how you are going to drive for the remainder of the tank and then compute what the mileage will be and then determine how many miles it can go. It can't possible know how you are going to drive or the conditions you will encounter. So why bother to even look at it? Much less believe the answer? Only good for a long trip at steady conditions in flat country,etc.

i'm in St Louis and I went to Chicago & back on a full tank and still had a 1/4 tank left. average 27mpg

Since you're in CA, you probably experience a ton more stop and go traffic than we do (and by stop and go, I mean stop lol).

I think a lot depends on how a person drives their particular car in terms of resultant mpg especially a large heavy car like the LS430 that has a potentially very thirsty V8. Especially here in DFW area a lot of people drive like their azz is on fire. I see people tailgating at 70+mph, accelerating into people and then riding the brakes, accelerating into red lights or stopped traffic ahead, passing at 70+ on the right, weaving and changing lanes to pass people, and lots of aggressive driving behavior behind the wheel. That type of driving results in poor gas mileage.

First thing for good mileage is to relax, stay calm, plan ahead, scan the road, always use your brakes and the gas pedal sparingly by driving very smooth. If you see a light turn red up a head, or traffic stopped take your foot off the gas immediately - duh. Operate the gas pedal as if you had an egg between your foot and the pedal. Same with the brakes most of the time. You will find the mpg goes way up, your brakes will last a lot longer, and your car will also age more slowly because it is being driven smoothly (does not mean slow).

To be honest i drive very calm, even on the highway i max out at 60-65. I rarely gas my car all the way and drive pretty normal. My car is relatively stock except for a drop and some wheels. Well Once i go in for a 90k maint. ill ask them whats wrong.

I am pretty stunned by my mileage lately. 90 miles to work RT about 20 percent is through town to the hospital and back to the freeway. Then I knock around with short trips all weekend to the theatre, Menards, grocery store etc. I usually come up at 24.5 and a 500 mile per tank is expected. Great car!
