Timing belt changing, several questions, please help! Thanks
2001 LS430 with 83K miles ...
It's not whether I should change the timing belt but if I should get all those below replaced.
My car is currently leaking around the valve covers and transmission pan. While at it, I've asked my mechanic what to order for timing belt replacement and he suggested:
1 red paste (for tranny pan)
2 valve cover gaskets
1 tension pulley
1 idle pulley
1 crank seal
2 cam seals
8 spark plugs
8 gomets (not sure if I spell it right)
Are the quantities correct? Do I need all of them? Do I miss anything? (for timing belt and the 2 leaks mentioned above).
BTW, does $800 labor sound about right?
Thanks very much in advance!

yes have the timing belt replaced while he is there replacing the other stuff and has to remove the timing belt anyway.$800 labor is a pretty good price for a job this size.a lexus dealer would most likely be double that.

Yes of course the water pump and the timing belt. I was just wondering the other parts are needed or not. I have two indys and one of them suggests replacing all while at it while the other is kinda "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" so wonder if I should buy them all since I don't know whether or not they need to be replaced now.
The $800 is if the mechanic comes to fix it on my driveway. If I let the other mechanic keep the car for few days, I'd charge around $600 labor.
Thanks all for your help.

I think the aisin timing belt kit on ebay comes with the water pump, cam seals, and tensioner. and i think the fel pro valve cover gasket set includes the spark plug tubes/grommets. I dunno if you would need a crank seal on a lexus? the labor rate sounds fair.

Thanks all again. The drive belt has been replaced about a year or so ago. I'll proceed with ordering the parts.
Are the kits any good svlexus? Or should I stick with OEM from the dealer? Thanks

You can add to you list the thermostat and gasket plus upper and lower water radiator hoses and Toyota red antifreeze. I'm just say'n . . . why put the old stuff that's 10 years old back on after all that.

Recommend A Mechanic
How's it going. I don't mean to jump into this thread but it touches on what I am looking to do in the near future with my timing belt. I just traded in my GS300 for a 2001 LS430, felt it was a great price, for such a awesome looking car. The LS is a one owner car, with only 79,213 miles on it. I bought it from a Lexus dealer in SoCal, and I was also provided the full vehicle maintenance history where the original owner did all scheduled maintenance at Santa Monica Lexus dealer, so in my opinion the car has been well maintained. The recommended mileage for the timing belt is 90k, and I have less than 80k, but it has obviously exceeded the # of years for this service. Its been driven less than 8000 a miles a year, and based on my evaluation of the car it is in prestine mechanical condition. In preparation of having to do the timing belt, I would like to know if anyone can recommend a mechanic in the San Fernando Valley/Los Angeles areas of SoCal so I can get a quote for this service, and possible other services that may be needed, afterall its a 10 year old car and anything is possible, even if its been well maintained. As much as I would like to keep the car maintained at Lexus their priciing is rather high for detailed work such as this, but I may still do the oil changes at the dealer. I hope to eventually get into the LS460 in a couple of years and If all goes well still keep the LS430. This forum is an excellent source of information.
