I have owned both an 04 with the base system and one with the ML system, and it isn't even close. The ML system is FAR superior to the base system in every way.

I have an 01 with ML and an 02 with the base Pioneer system. While the ML is slightly clearer (marginally), it doesn't give as much bass or volume as the the Pioneer.

I have an 05 with the regular Pioneer system and I'm VERY happy with it. In fact, I elected NOT to buy a car with the ML Nav system to avoid the issues that come with it. In most things I follow the keep it simple method.

Same thing with the suspension - I have the sport suspension with regular shocks.

With those 2 selections I have eliminated what I consider to be the two ****** in the LS's otherwise bulletproof reliability reputation.

YMMV.

I did the same with the air suspension. I really couldn't tell a difference in the ride quality between the air suspension and non-air. But with ML system, the difference was so dramatic, that I felt the risk was worth it. I know parts will fail, but I will replace them. It's that much better than the base system.

But you are right, those are the 2 weak links in the armor.

The Pioneer has the advantage of the more affordable rear subwoofer.

Seriously? You're going to worry about which audio system is in a 10 or 11 yearold car!? I can understand the air suspension as being a factor but not the audio system ... at this stage of the game. FYI I have the ML system in my '03 and it works just fine. When I bought the car the quality of the audio (ML) was one of the biggest disappointments. I just thought it would have been much better than it is.
