I don't have any personal experience with this, but this recent message thread may be of some help to you...

Hello,

I have the same car and just had a whole new stereo system installed. The biggest challenge was getting the factory nav / climate controls to work with a aftermarket stereo. Beat Sonic has everything you need to run a aftermarket head unit with the OEM nav and climate controls. If you want to run aftermarket amps and speakers that is up to your personal preference and how much you want to spend.

Since your factory amp went out that's going to make things kinda tough. We had to run the factory amp with just one speaker to keep the lady's / nav voice working. If the voice part of your nav is important to you would need to replace the factory amp.

One thing I learned the factory parts were too old and very expensive to replace. With in a couple of months the factory woofer and the front two mids broke. (And no I don't go around bumping my stereo.) Plus stereo systems have progressed a lot since 2001.

I don't want to **** off any ML fans but, my aftermarket system is so much better then the factory ML system. We ran a Pioneer head unit, Tru Technology amps, Hybrid mids and highs and Image Dynamics subs. Another huge plus is I could play my Ipod and DVDs now. Another thing to remember is there are so many factors to making a stereo sound good. (Installation, parts you use and matching everything.)

I guess that is the long version of suggesting you to contact Beat Sonic or JT Audio in Anaheim, CA. lol They have experience replacing the factory ML system in your car. We started with just replacing speakers using the factory mounting spacers, then hooked up a I pod player to the factory head unit and then replaced the factory stereo with a aftermarket system. Good luck with your stereo!
