You do not have to have an alignment done when replacing the tires. You will only lose tread life if your car is out of alignment and/or the castor and camber are off.

My front left tire has excessive edge wear on the outer side from the previous owner. Looks like he wasnt maintaining the right tire pressure. Should i consider doing just the front wheels?

Agree as long as tires show even wear no need for alignment.

But if you do have uneven tire wear, given the cost difference between 2 wheel and 4 wheel alignment usually isn't that much - I'd just get it 4 wheel aligned.
Outer edge wear can also be camber related.

If you're just going to do the front wheels, u should do all 4. Alignments only cost 50-60 dollars are firestone. I actually got the lifetime for 150 a few years back and go 3 or 4 times a year. If you're going to keep your car for a while, its definitely worth it.

Yup, Once a year depending on miles driven. Uneven wear if you do not catch it causes noise, vibration and irrepairable damage for the life of the tires. A good alignment at a good frame shop makes a world of difference. Check pressure at least once a month.

If you have never had an alignment since you bought the car, then a 4-wheel alignment is a good idea - especially in light of your new tires.

I rarely do. Absent tire wear, I change the tires and forget about the always offered alignment. I only have an alignment if is shows up as tire wear or I hit something.

If you get an alignment (which it sounds like you need) - get a good 4 wheel alignment.

^ damn...

Yea, Alignments should be done every 6 months or a certain set mileage interval which I cannot remember right now.

Since its a new car, I would make sure its aligned properly.
