04-06 Sealed Transmission fluid change interval? (The Mother thread)
#46
Well i hope im not going to have problems. Noticed a leak around my tranny pan (gasket). Gonna have to drop it to change the gasket. Dealer wants like 500 bucks to change gasket and fuilds. On top of that my rear bearing are going bad waiting on a qoute for that. Seams like im replacing alot of parts about now. I do the minor work on car. I cant complain there parts that eventually wear. 2002 ls430 123,xxx and climbing.

AFTER 80k miles? Whats the reasoning they gave you behind that one? I could understand them saying that it does not need to be done BEFORE.
For those that have changed their fluid, I read on another post that you can either drop the pan or the fluid lines. If you drop the pan you only get about 2quarts out, where you can get the majority of it by going through the line. What have you guys had done when you had your fluid changed. I don't think I want to pay for a partial fluid change.....

Don't know the origin but I have also heard this advice/story many times - not from trained mechanics just word of mouth mostly, for the last 30 years - "If you haven't changed Tranny fluid on a car ever and it has 80k or more its better to just leave old fluid because changing the fluid would cause clean out the old tranny and cause it to fail.
Yea that's about right, like the old fluid is keeping everything sealed and the new fluid will give it issues. Thats why you should do it like at least every 50k.
So its like 2-3 quarts to drop the pan and refill, but how about a complete flush? On my car its 11 something quarts 5at, so surly for 6speed AT will be up there.

I would go ahead and flush the trans even at greater than 80k. I am a big believer in running with clean oil/fluids in my cars. Take care of your car and it will take care of you is how I think about this.

From my very extensive research on this topic, the conclusion was the WS ATF in the "sealed" 6-speed tranny needs to be replace every 100k miles.
I replaced the tranny fluid in my 05' LS430 at 50k miles and plans to do it every 50k. I like my expensive tranny to last a very long time
Like Jim_Chow said, the WS fluid is life time if you don't care if the tranny last more then 100k miles.

I just replaced the tranny fluid in our GS300 at 23k miles, and the fluid is getting dark already. It is not pitch black yet, but is not clear anymore.
The main reason the WS fluid in our "sealed" tranny lasting longer is because it is a synthetic fluid. The older tranny that uses non-synthetic fluid require fluid replacement at 30k miles. So 25k is just a hair sooner, not excessive at all.
This is the reason why some car's tranny still shift perfectly smooth at 200k miles and some tranny is dying at 100k miles, regular fluid changes
GeorgeT's tranny is going to last a very long time. His dealer is good!

^ so changing at 73k should be no issue right? One guy at the lexus dealer was like yea you don't need to change it until 100k, then another guy said no it will start slipping.
Also no one seems to know the amount of fluid needed for the whole tranny. 12 quarts?

No, those are the amounts you fill in depending on the repair that you did.
For example, if you did a complete transmission rebuild, you would fill in 7.2L. If you replaced the torque converter, fill in only 5.3L.

But if you wanted to flush the Transmission you would need 20.49 quarts to change out all the old fluid no?

Dry fill: 10.9L
Drain and refill: 3.0L
Nothing in there about a flush, except "ATF-WS does NOT require any flushing or changing during the life of the vehicle."
It also says "Fill the transmission through the refill hole until fluid begins to trickle out of the overflow tube. Reinstall the overflow plug."
