well that didn't take long
I've had my 2002UL car for 5 days and apparently blew the subwoofer in the ML. I hear lots of rattles out of the back now. Funny thing is I don't think I push it that hard.
So I've checked other threads. There's always the cheap silicon fix, but is there another " bolt in" replacement subwoofer you guys are happy with?
I read the "here comes the boom" thread.
So is the subwoofer supposed to be 4 ohms? 2 ohms?
Someone suggested replacing the Levinson amp with a aftermarket better amp, but someone else said the Nav needs the factory amp to function.
Help . . .

I think that the oem sub is 12 ohm which is very odd. You do need the factory amp but can use a line-out converter to run a seperate amp off of it to power a seperate aftermarket sub.

Now, the Sub is 12 ohms, ( have not confirmed this myself, but thats what we have heard) and this is not the simple plug and play specification. Sure, another sub with the same ohm rating will work, BUT, if using the ML amp, how about it's sensitivity rating? Is it free air? If it's 3db more or less, you are either going to have a blaring sub, or one that barely compliments the rest of the frequency band.....and who the heck wants that? You could go all out and get another amp and sub and stick a nice little sealed box, and stick it in the trunk, but that would be my only option, because the other option of switching out woofers is going to be more of a hassle than it's worth. I vote for silicone.

I found this online... The poster is using a Polk 8 ohm replacement. I replaced mine with a JL Audio 8" sub a few years ago. Don't recall the imp rating... sorry.
