you have to buy the actually DVD player that mounts in the trunk. they can be found on ebay for about $700-900. mine should be here in the next couple of days, so I'll post an update as soon as I have tried it.

good we are waiting your project. Please don't forget to take pictures to show us what did you do.
k, well it's installed... but no disc (as you may have seen in the other thread I requested asking for a local to lend me a disc for a minute). but the good news is that instead of that funky old brown screen with the text behind it and a box saying incorrect disc or no disc, I have a new green screen saying to insert a correct disc... so far so good. now if only I could find a disc... if you're in the Dallas area, call me and I'll come to you 469-348-3171
Results are in... you tell me if it works super fast! some new features, etc...
WOW! EXCELLENT UPGRADE!!! I'M VERY IMPRESSED!
Now---for your NEXT trick, see if you can upgrade your upgrade to Gen5. I'd sooo follow your steps if it's possible!!!

w/LOUSY AM RECEPTION! HEY TOYOTA! my OTHER car is a loaded 2002 Acura 3.5RLw/NAV that's usable IN MOTION!
On my 2001 ls430 UL the navigation system runs from the dvd and there is no hard drive. The disc must be installed to work.
On a 2004 gen 4, the disc is inserted and copied to a hard drive, and the disc can then be removed since the system operates from the hard drive?
Is this correct, or am I off in left field?
Thanks,
Alan
there's no hard drive on either model. they both just read the disc and store it in cache (RAM) while you use it. disc must always be present. there's no difference in gen 2, 3 or 4 as far as the way they work. just different software.
