I have 56,000 miles on my 04 UL, with the right rear shock needing replacement.

Apparently there are different types of failures. I took my car in because the steering wheel was slightly off center while driving. Even so, there was no effect on how the car drove. They aligned the car and fixed the steering wheel problem.

My Lexus dealer told me that the right rear strut was leaking and needed to be replaced. I had no clue that was happening. They immediately ordered the replacement part and will install tomorrow. Fortunately I have the Premium extended warranty and it will be fully covered. Will be covered thru 2011 and don't expect to reach the 100,000 miles before then.

Nevertheless, I love the air suspension and all the goodies on the UL.

Rhetorical questions always crack me up... Thanks for the laughs.

The cost of the shock is around $900 to $1000, plus labor. Pretty pricey.

So ... almost exactly (1) Year Ago my RIGHT REAR air strut died.
See posting --> https://www.clublexus.com/forums/4280973-post30.html

Now it's (1) Year Later ... and the LEFT REAR air strut has now failed.

I'm seriously consider converting the whole suspension to after-market shocks & springs.
Is anyone interested in BUYING the Air Strut that I installed last year??
If so - that would really push me over the edge, to install steel.

Let me know!!

I believe you are supposed to replace them in pairs (both rears or both fronts, depending on which goes bad).

It is probably the wise choice. Convert the car to Megan coilovers. They're less than a grand and can be installed yourself in a day (likely a long day). The failure of these components (air shocks) seem to be eventual and pre-mature (IMO). Who ever heard of air shocks failing after 4-5 years. What a pathetic part from Lexus. I'm sure it was outsourced from the lowest bidder.

Anyway, i'll make the switch to coilovers sometime this year myself.

All OEM air suspension does that, from Range Rover to Mercedes to BMW...... actually the ones from Lexus is probably the longest lasting. It seems like no one can make air suspension reliable. The ones in Range Rover and Benz are horrible, they start to act up when the car is very new.

For functionality, it is not absolutely necessary.

Of course new anything feels nicer

No it won't, since the rubber bellows, like all rubber parts, will deteriorate with time.

I was gonna say that, the air bag is a rubber balloon, it will deteriorate and fail sooner or later.

i found a 01 with 99k UL for a pretty good price local. I dont really care for the air suspension sound expensive when it breaks. SO i cant decide if i want to take a chance on it or just look for a normal non ul...All the little goodies would be cool.
