To all who had failed air strut in their UL, is the pass side rear the 1st to go bad?

My car has the exact cross axis "bounce"!

$1290 for parts and labor at Metro Lexus in Cleveland, OH.
  • 2004 LS430 UL
  • 61,000 miles
  • 1st strut failure - as far as I know.
Mine failed at the same mileage too, 62k.

I'm astonished that there is this clear consistent issue - and Lexus has not taken notice and either issued a Service Bulletin or Recall.
Well a shock is a wear item, is just worn out, the pain is from the huge price tag of the strut and it didn't last that long. Lexus is replacing all the shocks that failed within the warranty period. I don't think they are doing anything wrong.

That is the purpose of this thread. And I am starting to see a pattern here.

Well what I was guessing would happen, happnened today.

My rear right shock went bad first, now my rear left shock is bad.

The previous cross axis "bounce", have become the entire rear end "bounce".

My mileage is now 62,737

I just got an interesting detail from my service advisor.

I knew before that the left and right rear shock are different part #.

My right rear shock took 3.5 weeks to get in after ordering it, and the left rear shock took 2 days. My service advisor told me the right rear shock is very hard to get.

I interpret that as since the right rear shock goes bad all the time as seen by all the responses here, that the stock is running low and hard to find them. My shock probably was ship in from Japan since it took 3.5 weeks!

Jeff, you are confusing me, so now you are going to get replacement airshocks??
You won't convert it to steel springs/shocks?

I am still undecided, still weighing the pros and cons of the 2 different routes. That one right rear air shock was ordered 3.5 weeks ago when I was just going to get that replace since Lexus is paying for half the bill, then as times goes on since the dealer couldn't get a hold of that shock from the warehouse, I start to wonder if I should just convert to all steel springs, I was thinking what happen if other air shock goes bad soon after I put in that right rear one. Sure enough, the left rear failed a few days ago.

So while I am undecided, the dealer got both air shocks in.

I do prefer going all steel, but then I have to figure it out and do it myself. But I know I would have 4 good shocks that would last 100k miles. I prefer the feel of the steel sport suspension anyway.

Letting the dealer to replace the air shocks are much easier, drop it off, get a cup of coffer, and pick up a loaner car and drive away But it is more expensive, and I still have 2 old air shocks up front that no one knows when would go bad.

So now the dealer got both shocks...
need to make a decision soon.

I would go with spring/shocks myself, or Coilovers. Once for all.

Yeah I am heavily leaning in that direction, I don't want to keep wondering when is the next $1000 air shock going bad

Thanks for your support!

Just replaced my 2 rear air bags....didn't have an issues w/ ride quality. Just the rear passenger side started to make a clunking sound everytime I was driving slow or went over speed bumps. Just replaced them.....no more sounds and of course w/ newer airbags it rides smoother.....just wanted to share....my car 2001 w/ 104K miles on it now...

well clunking noise is a form of failure, I would have replace them too if it is my car

The whole point of our cars is the ultra quietness, any noise is not acceptable.

It's not just the fact that it shouldn't be making a noise, the clunking actually is a sign that it is failing and the car will soon start rocking like the friggin boat that it is LOL
