i guess island driving is pretty bad for a car...

my hawaii bro's are getting around 13-14...
I get about the same here on Guam. I reset the average every time i get a refill of gas. my average speed never goes above 15. i guess because of all the stoplights we have to go through in a small island.

Hello all, I'm new to this forum and find the information provided here to be of extreme value. I recently purchased a 3 yr off lease 2003 LS430 (Platinum Blue Pearl), with 53,132 miles, and find that I have fallen head over heals in love with it. For the first 3 or so weeks my MPG was phenomenal in that I was getting roughly 19.2 MPG city & hwy. I have since done the 55,000 service at which time I changed the oil with mobil1 7500 sync blend 5w-30, (Lexus/Toyota dealer says they use only Synthetic Blend in the LS) Toyota oil filter, and K&N air filter. Since then my MPG has dropped to 16 to 17.3 MPG. I first attributed it to the K&N and consequently purchased a paper filter from NAPA which is reportedly as good a quality as the Toyota/Lexus filter, but still my MPG remains poor. Is it the oil, or is there something I'm missing? I also use Chevron 92 octane.

Thanks for your input.

Here's a short video clip on me driving down the freeway at 71mph. First off going down an incline so it would show 99mpg, then as it goes up a steep hill, it would drop down to 10.8mpg or so but my short 20mile trip, I had avg about 26mpg going 71mph.

I also get about 13-14 MPG in short trip city driving. On a few trips through the notorious West Los Angeles rush hour traffic, I've seen 12 MPG - However, we must remember that the MPG when you're totally stopped in traffic is ZERO and it takes a lot to fold that into higher averages! On the flip side, I came back from Reno a few weeks ago (not flat, over Donner Pass and the Grapevine) and we averaged 28 MPG. On that trip lots of folks heading back to Los Angeles, so we stayed with general traffic flow running 80-85 MPH.

I wonder what speed limit did the people testing these car use? Maybe city driving to get Ave 18 MPG at 35 to 40 mph and to get 25 MPG hwy they used 70-80 mph. Don't they test these cars to get the 18/25MPG estimates using the average state city and hwy speed limit. It looks like you will need to speed a little and at a also be soft or light on the gas pedal to acquire these kind of numbers. Also being your car is in properly tuned also with recommended tire pressure and premium gas with 92 octane or higher. Just my 2 cents... I really enjoy reading the good feedbacks contributing from all of the LS430 members. Keep them coming....

I just changed my dashboard view to Current MPG and monitored the MPG's as I was driving in both city and freeway driving lightly on the pedal and crusing no gas on the pedal while going downhills trying to get the highest MPG possible. My MPG's showed anywhere between 8 MPG to a whopping 99.9 MPG going downhill or on incline freeways. My dashboard on AVE came out to 29 MPG after today's short ride of about 40 miles. So far so good. I will have to calculate the number of miles drove and divide that by the number of gallons of gas to get a truer reading. I usually stop filling when the gas pump stops on it's own when filled. Will post this later after a few tanks.

Interesting thread. The other day I filled the tank of my '02 430 with 91 octane and have since only driven around the neighborhood averaging 15 mph and gone 30 miles. Lots of stop & go's and waiting in traffic. I checked the tank mpg (which was re-set) and it read 11.9. My tire pressure is right at 34/35 and the terrain was all flat. Pretty bad! However, on the open road I average 25 to 26 on the freeway. Pretty good!

Averaging 15 MPH for 30 miles will result in relatively poor mileage in pretty much any vehicle.

I checked my car and I haven't reset it in months. It is sitting on a 29 MPH average and 20.4 MPG. As I mentioned earlier, actual testing (miles divided by gallons burned) on several tanks have shown the computer to be accurate to .1 MPG.

When you did your average testing and compared using the miles divided by gallons burned, was it compared to the dahboard number on the TANK MPG or AVE MPG to be accurate within .1 MPG?
