Third party extended warranties
I have noticed that once a 2004 LS430 gets over 50k miles, the price drops significantly - at least that appears to be true in SoCal. I have to believe that, in part, this is because the Lexus extended warranty purchase is no longer an option (option expires at 4yr/50k). So, is there a decent third party warranty program that will offer coverage for cars over 50k miles? I believe these cars are barely broken in at 50k. However, buying any used car can be risky and a warranty can mitigate that risk.

Some of what were considered 'good' warranty companies a few years ago went belly up. In some cases customers received a pro-rated check back, others were SOL.
I would personally just save my $$ and apply to any needed repairs once my factory or CPO warranty expired.

If my memory seves me correctly, we in california are unable to purchase third party warranties for used cars.
When I purchased my wife's 98 GS4 from a private party, I was informed that the CPO Lexus warranty was NON transferrable and in attempting to get a third party warranty, none were avail to Cali residents. I could be wrong, but maybe others can confirm.

Not sure about 3rd party warranty. I can speak for the Lexus extended warranty, my understanding is any car that is still within the factory warranty period can purchase the Lexus extended warranty through any authorized dealer. Dealer sells them and price them individually, so it pays to shop around.
I bought mine through a Toyota dealer in the mid west, found the information here on CL, great person to deal with, and pay several hundred below any of the ridiculour quote that I received from Lexus dealers.
I got mine LS with 40k miles. I have no concerns over Lexus reliability. However, given the LS430 UL and all the electronic or sensor components on the car, it's the peace of mind I am buying when I do need to repair any of these components.

YES. This is exactly my point. Any car that has over 50k on it won't qualify for that warranty. I think this MAY be part of the reason the over 50k cars are so much less (that plus more miles on them). For the over 50k cars, the only warranty option would be third party (not exactly true - CPO cars can have up to 60k - but they're typically priced much higher). Again, I'm looking to see if there are any good ones out there. I don't mind buying a Lexus with over 50k. It just might be a UL and, like you, I don't want to be exposed to potentially costly repairs.

I talked to my dealership and they said they offer an extended 3-year or 100,000 mile warranty for $1,995. I didn't get exact details on exactly what it covered, but was told it was nearly duplicate to the factory warranty.

About 5 years ago I bought a 3rd party warranty for my Suburban from "Warranty Gold", a company that was highly recommended on a Suburban web site. I paid about $1400. to extend the warranty to 8 year/ 100K miles. The company went belly up & like DaveGS4 said, I was SOL. If I decide to buy a extended warranty for my 05 LS430, I will look for a discounted lexus warranty as oppossed to a 3rd party co.

Thanks posting the info. I also got my extended warranty from Troy after finding his info here. Troy was very easy to work with, completely smooth and painless transaction, and I recall my deal was very similar to bugg's as well.

Just thought I'd chime in with 3rd party info... my experience anyway... (just noticed they do NOT serve Cali... interesting)
Here's what I found on an '04 LS430 w >50K mi from this site:
http://www.click4warranty.com/Default.asp
1 Year / 12,000 Miles
2 Years / 24,000 Miles
3 Years / 36,000 Miles
4 Years / 48,000 Miles
I purchased the 3 yr / 36k mi 'Supreme Plus' warranty from these guys for my '96 SC400 in 03/06 when it was 10 years old & had 95k mi for $1849. Since then the warranty has paid for itself. I took it in twice to the Lexus dealer:
1) power seat motor, drivers side went out. Two motors were replaced at a cost of ~$850. I paid zero & had a loaner for a week while they waited for the parts.
2) front strut, rear control arm, center support bearing replaced. They covered $1350 & I paid ~ $300 because the dealer cost for the control arm was $70 more than a similar aftermarket part, and they disagreed on labor for about 1.5 hours. Also had a nice ES350 for about a week also
That's my take on that company, I know in the past year they bought out another warranty co, so it seems they're doing OK. Good luck on your decision.
