Default Sudden Death...

Hey all,

I've been driving my '99 Lexus LS 400 for some years now. Strangely, it has died twice this year.

I see a "Check VSC" warning, then, the engine cuts out. Thus far, I have had the misfortune of it dying on me once on the open road, and again on a car park exit ramp. I don't know about you, but my confidence in the car has been eroded by quite a bit.

The first time it occured, the dealer told me that it was a camshaft sensor that had gone out of accepted tolerances. It occurred once again yesterday. As of now, the car still sits at the workshop awaiting service.

Has anybody experienced this before? Any ideas where the fault might lie?

Not to knock on Lexus, but this seems to be a worrying trend, especially considering that my car is neither driven very hard, nor very old.

I eagerly await all your feedback on this.

Lots of things could cause this. The correct way to diagnose is to read the OBD II for the fault number.

I'm too new to Lexus to offer specific advice but coincidentally, my 99 Miata died three times this year. The codes pointed to several things with CAS (cam angle sensor) the common one. A do it yourself $65 part swap solved the problem.

Looks like I have to wait for the professionals for their diagnosis.

Will check back once I get word.

Thanks.

Just got the car back.

Managed to talk to the service rep. Apparently, it was the potentiometer linked to the accelerator that failed. The whole car shut down as a safety precaution.

I must applaud Lexus service, it really is quite quick, considering that the car went down only yesterday....

Thanks for all the feedback, guys.
